Feedback on the current Like system...

I do like being able to see the number of likes people have. You couldn't see them with the old system.
Maybe only the trophies should be displayed, and on the member's page in case somebody wants to access them? I agree, it seems a bit unnecessary. Another idea is like on most social sites the likes are anonymous with just the number? I guess the staff will let us know.

I couldn't agree more. This new system of "likes" does not reflect the "quality of posting" as our old system did. People are "hyper clicking" that like button in my humble opinion. :D
Yup, that's why I had ovation ability for my posts turned off in the old system. I don't have that option now.

I 'LIKED' this entire thread!
I too preferred the old system, but can part of it be revived? Modified? Liked more?

That would be so great. I even find myself "liking" a post where on the old system of limited "likes" I would not even think of it.

As I said in the first post, over use devalues the "likes" and they have become meaningless....

I like the current system. I feel more connected if i can like a post rather than just posting "I agree". I would hate to worry about how many likes i have left to give out. Sometimes i feel like i want to give 2 likes to something i am really on board with. A dislike button would be good at times...

That is actually the problem. If you study the science behind the "like" button and there is a lot of it. Just google it.
It makes you feel more connected. It is not the same as real life validation, but becomes a substitute for it.

I fully understand why social media has it. It is a necessary evil of social media to keep many people engaged. There are studies showing younger prefer it to older.
If I owned this site, I would keep it. It customers pay the bills and the like button keeps some people engaged longer and more often.

It also gives a dopamine rush to those that really consider it important and become dependent on it. It is not the same as meeting a person that is real to you and that person complimenting you in person, but it is an imitation of that.

It is methadone instead of morphine in the pain killer world. For me it is a distraction. I love BYC, do not get me wrong. I enjoy writing, reading and mostly I enjoy my birds. I have many friend from BYC that have become real friends. We see each other and support each other in real life. It is the way we communicate with each other.

The Surviving Minnesota thread is made up of people most of whom I have met and seen several times if not on a regular basis. In addition I gain knowledge here.

The old system allowed me to gain the knowledge I needed about the value of the knowledge. The new system does not. It tells me nothing other than who are cliche leaders and who are followers. I see posts that say "good Morning" and get a like...

Hardly a telling piece of information to us poultry people. I do wish we had a combination of both the new and the old. I know nothing of programing. I am not a techie. I can barely sign on without screwing up.

Under the old system one could see who had true knowledge and who was a group member leader or hanger on. I knew Casportpony knew her meds and I could learn from that. I knew JerryS was a near genetics genius and could learn from him.

Now all I know is So and so has a ton of followers for no reason other than she is here a lot and knows how to cozy up to someone else so they get 3-5 likes per post.

I use BYC as a reference material along with social media. I don't need or expect a dopamine rush here. I have learned to forage for mushrooms, mainly from here. This is educational for me.

Now I have to admit I have a ton of likes. I attribute it to a couple things. Long Cold winters and being retired with a still working younger wife. That and I like to write and enjoy humorous writings. Some take it wrong, but so be it.

The other thing is I do not sleep much 4-5 hours a day is all I need. So I have a lot of time to be here and still spend time with my birds.

I do spend too much time drinking coffee and laughing with people in the mornings. So I guess I get caught up in that addiction somewhat...I just hope I never "need" the dopamine rush or the validation of my self worth from the likes.

See how long this got. Midnight and I am typing......I like to write way too much!

Take care and thanks for the civilized conversation on this.
