It's good protein right? I cooked a macaroni meal that had chopped chicken in it. I wasn't going to pick out the chicken meat to give the birds just the roni's. Last year I would have picked out the meat, this year....NO. They are getting it for their breakfast treat. I never thought I'd see the day!

Those dern chickens will eat anything!

Honestly... why not? They would eat eachother alive if one was bleeding so I say sure.

My daughter (18 months) stepped outside with a chicken tender and got mobbed by the hens! They all jumped up and stole her chicken!! lol

My chickens would eat me if they had the chance. I let them pick though left overs from soup making and if the feral cats are lucky, they will be able to steal a few bits here and there.

Yup. I felt a little weird doing that too at first, but they are little cannibals, right?

One of my friends has a brutal childhood story about finding her favorite hen in the coop and all that was left of her was a bloody puddle with a skeleton and some feathers. They had picked her clean!

Chickens love chicken... after all tastes like chicken!

Favorite treat of my flock of hens is the chicken carcass left when I buy one of those roasted hens at the grocery. I have to hunt to find the few leftover chicken bones after a couple hours. They are real scavengers. They have no problem with eating chicken, and I no longer have any icks about serving it up to them. ~G

Yep. Both times I've processed roos, the hens hung around hoping for a treat. And, after removing the pieces we weren't planning to eat (brain, lungs, etc), I cooked those up and fed them right back to the hens. There was a feeding frenzy. I figure its protein and if they don't mind eating it, why should I mind feeding it?

Well, you guys were right! They gobbled the cooked chicken up and pulled pieces from each other's beaks.

I'll try a carcass on their next adventure.

I haven't given them chicken per say. But i have given them their own eggs. I cook them every weekend so they are eating chicken I suppose. I haven't tried any meat leftovers, but they love crickets and worms and any other little bug, so it is all protein, I don't think they care what it is and it isn't like it is unhealthy for them, RIGHT!

Thanks for this topic!

We don't have garbage pickup out here and food leftovers that fill 1/4th a bag is a silly and wasteful trip to the garbage dump but if I leave it in the house we get flies - tons of um. It's also difficult to put them directly into the compost when it could attract bears, coons, or neighbor dogs(and has in the past done so. I just find my compost scattered because something came along and dug through it for food scraps).

The food scrap issue is what finally made me cave to get chickens. BUT, I love to eat chicken myself - a lot of it. Roast, fried, barbecued - It doesn't matter. BUT I'm rather picky, don't like the skin or most of the fat so I have a /lot/ leftover with chicken meat - even with eggs because I hate the crispy edges of my sunny side ups. I was initially planning to feed these scraps and such to my birds - knowing full well chickens are cannibalistic and opportunistic feeders - but anytime I saw it mentioned here (chicken cannibalism) people were saying they don't and never would feed their chickens chicken scraps. I was starting to self-doubt on the subject. Now I feel tons better, thank you.
