Feeding Whole Grains

digitS' :

Anyway, you may already have seen this on the usefulness of "Field Pea in Poultry Diets" from NDSU. Lots less anti-nutrients in peas compared to soybeans, as I understand it.

No Again I had not seen that specific article..Thanks.. Many of my "odd" organic grains come out of North Dakota.

Chickfarmer, yep Pearson's square... Playing with feed nutrient, protein and amino acid profiles is sort of a fun "hobby" for me.. It can be real tricky finding good data on protein values of various potential feed components......... I guess I am a chicken feed nerd.....

IMO alfalfa meal or pellets works great when green forage is not accessible 7 months of the year here in Lake Superior snow belt..

Did anyone happen to save a downloaded HTML or cached version of this link in 2010?
The link doesn't work and Uof K doesn't appear to have a small flock section anymore..

There are many articles online about the benefits of feeding chickens whole grains. There's been research into putting out the different feed components and allowing chickens to select what they need - chickens are actually rather good at eating what they need. Chickens fed whole grains have larger, more efficient gizzards. This site has a calculator: https://www.gardenbetty.com/garden-bettys-homemade-whole-grain-chicken-feed/

Here is a personal account of someone who changed their birds onto whole grain based feed. http://www.sterlingcenterfarm.com/Feeding/Wholegraindiet.htm

You must change them over slowly if you are currently feeding pellets to provide their gizzards a chance to adapt and enlarge.
