Still have Juncos hanging around. Had a pair of geese hanging out at the sump this morning. Looked like she was making a nest.

Wood ducks nest in hollow trees. Maybe the female is/ going to nest nearby?Brought out the camera and got a better photo of one of the ducks eating the bird seed. This has never happened before. We are right on the river, but we are on the high bank. 30' high, in fact. So it's not like he just wandered out of the water and over to the bird seed. He had to fly here. I guess he can find it just like any other bird, but it seems rather unusual to me.

Male wood duck is what it looks like to me. Probably was checking out the trees and found the seeds. We don't have any hollow trees. I feed the birds under a stand of about a dozen fir trees that are very healthy and about 100' tall. Birds find the seeds because they are landing in the trees. I cannot figure out how the ducks found the seed at all.
So, does this look like a wood duck to you? We do not know ducks at all. We were just surprised to see them in our yard.
So far we have only seen ducks that live on the river and make their nests in the tall grasses around the slough. We have at least 3 different kinds, but the only one I can positively identify is the mallard. We also get geese, Canadian. But all of them seem to stay on the water, and even when they are flying they are following the river.
Very cool. Thanks.Male wood duck is what it looks like to me. Probably was checking out the trees and found the seeds.
