Feeding Wild Birds

Today a small flock of redwing blackbirds arrived. There's even one female in the flock. Yesterday as I pulled into the beagle club lane I saw a redtail catch a squirrel. It's the second time that I have seen that happen.

We have a resident bunch of birds, chickadees, cardinals, red finches, tufted titmice, and an assortment of wood peckers. They have been emptying the bird feeder most days, and eating most of a block of suet in 2 days.

I was not feeding them but these Tundra Swans are hanging around the state park that I work at. I guess they stop for a visit on their way north every year.

Wow! cool. It looks like there might be a Black neck in with them, but my eyes aren't that good. It could be an escaped Swan. Some folks don't pinion.

I've been feeding wild birds since I was a child. Currently I have 7 feeders hanging from two pole systems. The last couple of years I have noticed a decrease in the numbers and variety of birds at the feeders, have attributed it in part to a huge housing development being built across the street at the end of our road, a location which used to be acres of fields and woods.

But I have seen many Purple finches the last couple of weeks, a species I haven't noticed since I moved from New England to the Carolinas over 30 years ago.

Something killed a dove in the backyard this morning - guessing a Cooper's hawk.

Speaking of Cooper’s Hawks, one dropped a large rat into my friend’s chicken pen the other day, moments after she locked her birds in the coop. Yes it was really most sincerely dead.

On Thursday I saw the first woodcock of the season at the club. Today the 'white' hawk was there.
