Feeding Wild Birds

Last week a Rose Breasted Grosbeak male showed up at the club feeders. It always amazes me how unafraid they are. This morning I flushed a turkey hen from her nest at the beagle club. 8 very dark eggs - she put a bit of a scare into me.

There's been a rose breasted grosbeak at my feeder the past few days too along with a few red winged black birds. I love seeing them out there.

At work the other day, I was so excited to finally see a pileated woodpecker! I've been trying to see one for years and he just decided to peck at the wood around my truck while I was parked. He was beautiful!

We hear them but I have only seen a Pileated at home a couple times, years ago.

Yesterday the bearded hen turkey was feeding under the hanging bird feeder at home. Wonder if the tom with her felt his masculinity challenged as her beard was quite a bit longer than his. She was back today - jumping up to knock seeds out of the feeder.

The Phoebe nest at the beagle club was a failure. I think something may have killed the male. I'd see the female off the eggs , feeding a lot of the time. She finally stopped setting, and I removed the nest. If she locates another mate, there is still time for a second nest.

I have a pair of small birds building a nest on top of one of my sites again this year. I have to get a picture with my good camera so I can actually see what they are. They did this last year in the same spot but just when their babies were almost old enough to fledge, a snake got up there and ate them :/
