Feline leukemia?*Updated* #2 He's gone :(

we had a cat that we rescued-that had felv-we kept him.our other cats were vaccinated.We treated the infections as they came for about 3 years,kept him indoors,had him fixed etc. Finally he got an infection that didn't respond to antibiotics and it was time. I am sorry you are going through this.(hugs)

I just don't want him to suffer or to allow the kids to watch him suffer. One thing I have taught my kids is that we were appointed as stewards. One of the responsibilities of that stewardship is to not allow any animal to suffer needlessly. If we kept him alive would it be for him? Or for us?

Leukemia is tough on a cat. Your right, he most likely had it as a kitten, bu tI am suprised they didnt test him before vaccinating him for it, but it is not that uncommon practice.

Maybe your daughter should read about it with you and go visit him with you. I have spent 10 years in a large vet hosp as a CVT and it is difficult for owners to make decisions from the outside of those walls. THey workers really watch the pets and understand their suffering and see them going downhill. When owners stop by, the pets perk up so the owner sees a "progression" but then they leave again and the pet does downhill again.

If she can she that he is not well, it might be a bit easier on her.

I'm so very sorry. That is a tough thing.
Many cats do indeed live for years with this illness, but others do get sick over and over. I'm sure your vet is not recommending euthanasia lightly.

If your cat was vaccinated within the last 12 weeks for Felv the test can show a false positive for the virus.

Occasionally after exposure to the feline leukemia virus, a vaccinated cat will develop a transient viremia (temporarily become FeLV positive for up to 12 weeks), but the immune response produced by the vaccine will control the virus such that these cats will not develop clinical disease.

My daughter and I went to the vet together. He looked horrible. It's done. He's gone, but he won't suffer.

I am so sorry about your cat. It's a hard decision to make.

I promise that with time, the sad feelings (and the doubts you may experience) will be replaced by memories of the animal you loved so much.

You made a hard decision, but sounds like it was the best one to limit his suffering.
