Our babies eat it fine...the big ducks, however, are turning their bills up at it. I've just tried it twice for them. They're going to get pretty hungry!

Hi everybody, I know this thread is about fermenting...but I also know there is A LOT of knowledgeable folks here! I really need help with composting and I'm pretty sure my thread is just getting buried.

Has anyone tried adding fermented vegetables to their flocks diet? I have given it as a treat and they love it.

I was thinking that If I was able to scale up the garden a bit I could grow A lot of sweet potato's and cabbage. Enough, so that if fermented, it might actually make a dent in the feed bill. I think it could be done with what ever veg you are able to grow well.

Has anyone tried this?

We boil root crops to add to the fermented feed all the time. In our case these are things like cassava, xanthasoma, sweetpotato, beets--all "cull" stuff that we dont need to eat or sell. Also fruits like banana and papaya. Basically anything with usable carbohydrate that can replace some of the grain in the feed. i will also sometimes add certain greens, cooked or blended up raw, depending what it is or whats easier or better--to increase the protein and add other nutrients to the ff. they get plent of layer mix in the ff, but these additions definitely help cut down on the feed expense significantly, with no negative effect on health or laying (if anything a positive one.) Feed is very expensive here in HI (not all of us live in the grain belt or are ok with GE feed grain in our eggs) we personally prefer to buy better feed and make it go further!

IS there any danger in the fermented food? Like anything I can do wrong? Let it ferment too long? Does it rot? Mold? If it can go wrong then for me it probably will!
