FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

OK, so I have a question and I'm gonna post it here.. since FF is the ONLY thing keeping my chick alive! This is not an emergency, as we are going on 1 week right now. But I just want some experienced opinions to cull or not.

Last Sunday after being gone for the day, a silkie/unknown mix (about 9 weeks old now, smooth feathered, standard size, 5 toes, dark skin, crest formed around 4 weeks similar to Swedish Flower that aren't born crested, slight feathered legs, clean feat & face) that was broody raised and booted at 4 weeks with his brother, had his legs floppy and not able to hold himself up. Naturally being beat up by other flock members and trying desperately to get away. Other than un-usable legs, NO other symptoms. No respiratory signs, no diarrhea, normal color stool, tail held high, eyes bright and clear, no progression of paralysis, stable head when not trying to walk, sits up nice and tall and talks with me. Closest thing I can associate is maybe vitamin E deficiency? None of the diseases fit as far as I can tell. Been supplementing E in FF and also nutridrench. Chick doesn't have enough control to drink water and doesn't do so when I try to assist. So the first day or 2 with supplements in the water was likely irrelevant. Again this IS the reason I am positive it IS the FF and the moisture content keeping him alive. Today is day 7. I don't *think* I'm seeing improvement. Of course the real question is cause... genetics or parasites seem like the most viable sources. I haven't yet done a fecal float because the girl that does them at the vet isn't there every day. And there are no VISIBLE signs of external parasites (should I treat externally anyways?). Won't treat for worms without verification, that would likely be a death sentence.

I have 60 ish birds (all ages and genders) and feed flock raiser with 20% protein (fermented), always free range on lush pasture, and many feeders to avoid bullying. Treats are VERY minimal with that many birds and knowing too much makes me a tightwad with them.

IF the bird survives and is a boy, we would cull and eat at 16 ish weeks anyways. If it's a female, might let her stick around for a year and lay eggs before rehoming. Don't believe in breeding the weak, plus not breeding mixes. So my only serious commitment is to doing what is right for the bird. Note if the legs don't start working, I don't have the means to support a disabled chicken. I have tried to save it and give it a chance at life. How do you know when resistance is futile? What would you do? Cull and discard, cull and try to get a necropsy, or keep trying? Any other suggestion?

TIA for the input from my many valued and experienced peeps! :highfive:

You could try adding some B vitamins, and perhaps some Selenium. I am not qualified to give medical advice. But, IF I wanted to give the bird every opportunity to heal, I might go this route. Try it for a week, and if no improvement, then cull. Have you done a thorough research on Marek's disease? I would also want to rule that out.

I would start another post in the Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures
You will get More and probably better answers there. There are going to be a lot of people that do not go to this thread and they may have an answer for you .
I would think if it doesn't have anough power on it's own to drink water then I would cull :(
GOOD LUCK :O :) :)

Thanks guys!

I definitely want to rule out Marek's, which is why I will seek necropsy since only 1 symptom fits. And I read that diets high in selenium diminished symptoms of E deficiency. I have been using nutri drench. Do you know of another source of B's and selenium? Of course I will also google it.

@tigger19687 Welcome to BYC! :frow Hope you are enjoying. Great suggestions. :highfive:

Well, not sure if mine still like it. They eat some, but not much. I saw them in the coop pecking around for the dry that was spilled in there the other day instead of out eating the FF.
It IS fermenting, I can see the bubbles so I know it is working. Smells like Kimchee (sp) but not hahha.
I might have better results if I had crumbles but I have the scratch type looking Organic New Country. Wonder if it is that.
So I put back up their PVC feeder and will see how they do with the dry Organic New Country.
I will put out both

I bought dried Mealworms and they now LOVE ME, well no not really. But while eating it they could care less if I pet them. Run out of mealworms on the ground and I BETTER NOT DARE TOUCH THEM ! LOL

My chickens won't eat dry crumble any more so I've been putting out a whole days worth of ff. Works out ok even in the heat.

They also don't like scratch and peck much. They'll eat it if I toss it out like scratch sometimes, or if I wet it a bit before feeding but not fermented.
Tried short and longer ferment times but it just sits out there. Hope it isn't rancid before I can use it up. Thinking about the freezer...

Well, I made Mold in my canning jars :(
And they were not eating it much anyway. Must be a sign.

Can I just have it soak from morning and serve it at night ?
They seem more interested in just pecking around the hen yard.
silly chickens.

Oh and I spoiled them with the dried Mealworms. Now they think I have them when I come in .

It took mine about a week to adjust to Scratch and Peck. They were also eating crumble before we switched. I took all of the crumble away and just fed the fermented S&P and initially they rejected it but now they wolf it down like vultures. I did sprinkle some crumble on it for the first few days just to get them started.
