Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

RAMPS: If I get bored in mid to late January and there's a bit of snow on, I will go into the 'ramp patch' and dig out a mess by finding the old seed stalk. Lots of people still do that and have ramps for sale around that time but they are priced something like truffles.

They have no leaves, just the sets and they are so good. I buy them once in a while at that time but I do have a pretty good load of them in my cellar in leaf bedding. I buy those along the side of the road just to save what I've got and to kinda' support people who are 'go-getters' because it's not the easiest thing to do, even if you know the stalk.

Sounds like what I have read about ginseng harvesting, not easy.

I've got some polk in the freezer. My mom and most of the older folks love it. It is okay. I never really liked any cooked greens until a few years ago. I've had to go "pick some polk" for mom... about as long as I can remember. lol

Folks around here pick wild turnip greens too. What about "dock", ever ate it?

I used to go 'sanging' when I was a kid but don't bother it much anymore. The timber is torn up too much now.

My parents and grand parents used to take me with them to cut all sorts of wild greens...wild mustard, dock, stinging nettle etc.

We would even pick may apples, service berries aka 'sarvises', wild black berries and raspberries, strawberries, persimmons.

It's my first time on a cruise as well. A belated 40th bday gift from my mom. Of course the only stipulation was she got to go

I will post some pics when I get back. Still have 2 more days till we leave so trying to get the house set before I go. My son will be home watching all the critters but he refuses to do anything with the hens so 2 friends will share the job. I'm blessed they are willing to help. And they know they get fresh eggs in exchange

I put the 2nd heated bowl in the coop but didn't plug it in. I told my friend if temps stay below freezing like they said it will be, it needs to be plugged in and their ff put in it. I put some shavings in the coop and tomorrow big bag of leaves to keep them happy. I tend to overdue things before I go away, want to make sure everything is set while I am gone.

And make sure you go on all the excursions you can afford. They are horribly overpriced but it is hell to come home and wish you'd done something you may never have the chance to do again. Have a marvelous time and eat everything. You have the rest of your life to take off the 10 pounds you'll gain!! lol :)
