Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Have any of you ever done anything interesting with sassafrass? I have some in my yard. I believe it has been here as long as I have. Have any of you ate the sumac berrie thingies? Back in my younger days I was around some folks from the Middle East and Southeast Asia and they turned me on to ground sumac on rice. Ohh my, good stuff! I'm still not sure if they have the same sumac that we do and I read that there is a poison sumac that grows somewhere around here. I've never seen it.

I'm one of those old people, what is Candy Crush? LOL I was just thinking about you Bee, how is everything holding? Electricity must still be on and that's good. It's going okay here. The only problem is my rooster pen. It's taking a beating. If it doesn't do any more it might be okay but if it does do more I might have to work on it. A whole lot of ice has even built up on the netting. Snow is one thing but ice is a whole different ballgame.

I will have to do a search for some of those books. I have never seen any around here. I guess I'll have to find them online. There could come a day when that info will be very useful. I love that kind of info!

Still raining cats and dogs here, temps are finally dropping a bit so we might see ice by morning. Definitely will have some flooding around these parts with this rain but we don't have to worry about that here because we live up on a ridge with no near streams or rivers except the holler run. Electric may go out by tonight if ice starts to uproot the trees.

Candy Crush is one of those stupid cell phone games that folks are addicted to nowadays...my DIL was nose on the screen over it for a good while before she finally lost interest.

TW, what do you have on the top of your pen to deflect the weather? Any way of getting some cattle panels arched over it and a good tight tarp so that it will shed rain, snow and ice better? So easy to put those up with some zip ties to secure it all and really withstands the wind and weather.

Hey there sis. How are you making it? I hope all is well. I've ate dandelions but what are creasies?
Hey there! Hope you aren't slip sliding away with all of that ice. Do you still have power??

Creasies are a wild growing green in the spring. Here is a link about them:

If you find them, you can actually start a patch of them by digging up the plants and moving them. They come back every year, so you don't have to plant them each year.

Folks...I'm too tired (and stuffed with pinto beans over the last of the catheads) to respond to the questions...without a little nap

A couple cattle panels would do the trick. I've got a big tarp up that sheds the rain just right and usually when I use those I can just knock the snow off. I seem to have forgot about ICE duh! They are still dry and toasty under there so far, considering. I'll do a little work on it tomorrow.

We didn't get a whole lot of rain before it started freezing. Hope you guys don't have much damage.

There are all sorts of books out there as guides to wild foraging, with really good pics and explanations of the zones and seasons to harvest if you are really interested in such things, TW. I've got the old set of Foxfire books that really has such things and more from the oldsters...a wealth of information to be had out there. But...very few people with the right mindset to actually forage, kill, grow, harvest and live off the land nowadays. Most folks won't even kill a chicken, let alone harvest wild game or tramp through the hollers looking for food.

The tough old generation is dying out and the new generation are too busy playing Candy Crush.

I am in the mid - generation, but raised by a do it all Gma, so have a lot more sewing, cooking, gardening, etc.... skills then others my age, but in the interest of full disclosure I am also a candy crush player lol

I'm really glad I have the rooster pen where I have it now instead of how I had it set up before...that other pen wouldn't have been near adequate for keeping out the weather and keeping the birds dry and warm. Thinking about leaving it set up for the winter in case I come upon any more good deals on free roosters so I can keep putting that meat in the jar. Most of the deer kills we got this year went right off this land and into other freezers, so I'm either going to go out and see if I can pop one or just put more rooster in the jar. Either way, I'd like to have a bit more meat in the jar for the winter.

I don't worry too much about storm damage...it always presents a challenge and can be an adventure. I think a lot of people miss out on seeing that aspect of emergency type situations...they make life more interesting, give you a chance to see what you are made of, and give you good stories to tell. Can't beat that with a stick.

Still have electricity thank goodness. Not too much slipping and sliding. I've stayed home today. Been out three times to feed and check on critters then wrapped up in a blanket the biggest part of the day. lol I got some eggs boiled for pickled eggs but that was as far as I got. Need to get in there and finish that up.

I will check out those creasies. Sounds interesting. I hope you guys somehow dodge the weather. It could be much much worse but the ice isn't too much fun. lol Stay safe! :)

Good luck on getting another deer. I bet you'll get that done. :) That was a good idea on the roosters. Good and cheap or even free meat is "a good thing" as Martha would say. LOL

I agree, I sure don't wish for hard times but you never know what you can actually do until you're put in that hard spot. Then you get that spark inside you and start thinking, "Okaay, now here's what I've gotta do." My mama calls it "backing your ears" (like a stubborn, peed off mule) and just doing what you have to do. I bet I've heard that expression at least a hundred times. lol I am sooo glad to have been raised by a tough woman like her. :) They sure don't make them like they use to.
