Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Me to Bee and pray God keeps my chicks safe. I had someone saying they wanted all the ones I wanted to sell and I was so excited because I wanted to get me a large roll of hardware cloth with the money from it for making my grazing frames with. Well guess what, they ONLY want to give me 5 bucks a piece of them. I KNOW for a fact they intend on re- selling them and I told my hubby that was just NOT right since I was the one that has spent the majority of the money getting them to this point and then THEY want me to sell them for 5 each so they can make a PROFIT off them! Makes me so mad because I can't stand injustice.

I have 6 RIR cockerels and then I also have about 14 BA cockerels. That's a lot of money to be made if they got them for only 5 each when they sell for 9-12 bucks around here they say. Just not right. Now I'm trying to decide where I need to go with them so I can make the most from them to get some of my money back at least. :)
Thank you for your time answering all our questions Bee.
Went looking for that video and am not seeing it now. I know it was before the 666 but not finding it. I'll keep looking. Sure WISH they would do sticky threads on the good info in this thread so people can refer back to it.

Around here grade cockerels for processing will go at $5 ea. but if you keep them a little longer and sell them one or two at a time, asking $10-$15 for them, you might get that if someone is looking for one adult rooster to add to their flock. You see...some people get a rooster as a chick, raise it like a baby, it turns on them at sexual maturity and they then either kill it or rehome it..and then they look for a "nice" rooster. Market to THOSE folks and you'll get your money on those roosters..but if you sell them by the batch or flock, you will probably only sell them at the bulk rate someone expects if they are just going to kill them for eating.
I have had a couple of really healthy hatches this year from FF hens

The chicks have not been larger than those hatched from dry fed hens, but they're strong, healthy, and I have not had one with abnormalities or leg issues ( I did before with shipped eggs, dry fed hens' offspring). Cream Legbars have thick shells, but all the chicks hatched fine! The best thing, and this could be coincidence...I've had higher female to male hatches both times (3/2, and 6/3)!

It's not a coincidence and you can get the same results with using ACV steadily in the water, so I'm thinking the acidity of the FF is producing the same results. I used to get mostly pullets on the hatches when using ACV in the water and mostly does on my meat rabbits when I used the ACV in their water as well. It also works on sheep..at least, it did for mine and I read one article where the farmer reported 85% ewe lambs after starting to add ACV to the water and also reported longer, stronger and finer grade wool as well.

Since the FF also has that acidity from the acetobacter bacilli that is drawn in from the air~ even when one does not use ACV to charge the batch, they are going to have that in there anyway. I stopped using ACV in the water after starting the FF as I noticed that the eggs had the same good taste they had when I used the ACV but it was from feeding the FF that also has it's own type of vinegar.

@ChocolateMouse & Demosthine... Now y'all are going to have me building a rabbit coop! LOL I use to have a couple tame rabbits but they were just pets for my nephew. They weren't meat rabbits, just some small pretty kind. lol I have never got into meat rabbits but I have thought about it for a while, even bought a book or two on it. I have eat several wild rabbits over the years and they are tastey. I have heard that tame rabbit is even better. I don't know what has happened but we have more wild rabbits right here around our yard than I have ever seen! Sometimes I will see at least half a dozen of them out at around dusk. They come out a little while before the chickens go in for the night. Funny thing, one of my pullets decided to chase one one night then realized what she was doing, turned and ran the other way! LOL These crazy things will just come up within 8-10 feet of me! They will just hop right up among the chickens while they are out free ranging. Needless to say they will get thinned out come rabbit season. My mom loves rabbit and gets peed at me for not killing her one of these! LOL

Oh yeah I would love to talk to you guys about how you are growing them. Hmm...has anybody tried raising them on ff?

I just started a gallon jar size of new ff two days ago. It has furry growth on it rather than the normal film I have seen on the top with our other ff. I did add probably a bit too much yogurt to this batch. Should I throw it out or scrape it off and add a little acv?

I'd mix it in and feed it out! Everyone seems to be seeing some fuzzy white growth in their FF right now and it doesn't seem to be related to the temps...was wondering if this is just a different spore we are seeing at this time of year? I've been mixing it in and feeding it out...it's very little amounts and doesn't seem to be persistently a problem...just saw a few portions of it a couple times this week.

Since mine free ranges and I haven't even been feeding pellets, it isn't even a thought for me. However, she (I just confirmed it's a she) runs in the same yard as my chickens and turkeys, but I've never caught her so much as interested in the fermented feed. Remember, they are entirely herbivore, so meat is not in their diets at all. I threw out a huge amount of prickly pear slurry yesterday and she was all over that like maggots on a gut wagon, along with every other animal I own!

We did certify organic a couple years back (before the chickens were full grown) but we had a fire that fall started when a neighbor was baling hay. It took out all of our land and fence right up to the barn and coop. Luckily they saved the horses and our chickens were being brooded in the house. But the fire department sprayed flame retardant over several places to reduce flare ups. We lost all of the remaining crops in the gardens and are not eligible for re-certifying for 3 years.

Loghousemom, that had to be such a bummer, not to mention scary! Sorry that happened to you. I'm very glad your horses, chickens and of course YOU were not hurt!

LOL What exactly is prickly pear slurry? It sounds good ...but then nooo it sounds bad. LOL I wonder how well you could free range rabbits in electric poultry netting. Hmmm...?
