Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Color me green with envy. They don't grow out here, so I've been having to bribe friends in WV to send me some each spring, for the last couple years. I eat all of them my hubby can stand

, and then dry the rest so I can enjoy them the rest of the year. Best spring tonic out there.

Man, I miss WV some days. But my heart will always be here in Montana. People always ask where the accent is from, and I tell them I'll always be an old hillbilly. I'm just surrounded by bigger hills these days. Still walking with one leg shorter than the other, though. ;)

Montana!! That's home away from home, ain't it? I've always wanted to see Montana. If I had to live anywhere other than WV, Montana would be the place!

Hope you folks don't mind if I post a couple pics of my son while my biscuits bake.

These were taken a couple years ago...just about this time. He was on leave.

He's holding the matriarch of my Patterdale Terriers.

Nice buck he took about half mile from the house.

What a cutey!!!! No, we don't mind a bit....nice scenery is nice scenery!

Very nice buck!!!! Wish we still had big ones like that around these parts....too heavily hunted here now and the deer are all scrubs, even the does.

Could you not plant a few there? Cover them with very heavy leaf pack for winter..???

Now that's one thing I do not tolerate well...a barking dog.  I don't mind a few barks when something is out there but to just sit down and bark for awhile for hours on end would send me off like a mad woman!  I had a GP mix that was prone to talking all night like that but she responded well to training...she was a big sissy.  I'd just yell out the back door to "shut up and git in yore house!!!!" and that would end the ruckus.  Pretty soon all I'd have to do is open the back door.  Then it graduated to my feet hitting the floor in the house....she was very smart and I don't know how she could hear all that and still be barking like a coonhound but she soon learned if Mama has to get to her feet, she better get that mouth shut.  :gig   Jake learned from all that as a pup so he became a pretty silent dog...if he barks at all, I know something big is out there.

I've lived in closer proximity to neighbors once upon a time and had to "train" the neighbor's dog about barking~ with the use of a BB gun.  Didn't take long before she, too, was done with senseless barking episodes.  Then I had to "train" their dog about getting into the trash~with the use of a .22 rifle.  Those neighbors moved away not long after that....   Guess it doesn't pay to live next to a redneck that has a short tolerance for rudeness.

I have no doubt got the hard headedest (is that a word? lol) dog around. She will bark until I could kill her!!! I said the other day if I ever have to take her to the vet they are liable to call the popo on me for all the bb's they might find in her... butt! It irritates me to no end. I keep thinking she might have to find a new home. She's a chicken killer too. My other dog just looks at her when she has a barking fit. If he barks I know to get up and go see what's out there - somebody or something for sure.

That's exactly what I always said. It was a dream come true when they offered hubby a job out here in 2011. Couldn't get packed fast enough. It's as beautiful as you dream it is. Seriously. Here's the view off my back porch this time of year.

I'm gonna give it a try. I've got a handful of seeds I've been hoarding from my favorite ramp patch and hope to plant them next year once I have some garden beds put in. I'll beg some city-living friends for bags of leaves from under their deciduous trees (tough to find out here), and I hope to give them dappled light using pallets and maybe some camo netting. I'll be the happiest girl in Montana if it works!

Ever try one of those citronella bark collars on her? I found out, quite by accident, that dogs HATE citronella and will do anything to get away from it. Then I read about how some smart person designed citronella bark collars and I figured they must have found out by accident too and then capitalized on a good thing. Even my milk cow would shy away from a rag with citronella on it! She'd take one whiff of that rag from a distance and take off.

Let me tell you this, you never saw a dog try to get away from something more unless it would be a skunk spraying directly into their face! I got the bright idea to make up some "natural" flea collars for my dogs once consisting of bandanas soaked in citronella and lavender essential oil. My GP mix went crazy trying to rub that thing off or rub it in something that would take that smell away...poor thing. I took it off and never tried that again but it stuck in my mind for future reference.
