Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

That Aussie clearly needs sent to the Chicken Psychology Center to learn to live in a flock and the Chicken Whisperer can work with him on his human aggressive tendencies.

Nooo, I have toned down my wardrobe so as not to offend his sensibilities. LOL My offense today was picking up a gallon jug of water I left in the coop over night to see if it would freeze. I guess he fell in love with that water jug...? But he missed me...ha ha ha (evil laugh)!!! ...but I didn't miss him! HA!
where's yo stick? Mine works!

You are what I consider a Good Shepherd.

When God grants it I will have the dog meant for me. He guided me to my current flock that I never dreamed of, but they are what I my family needed. He does work in mysterious ways.
oh Bee can you hope that for me to about that dog? I want one that isn't huge but not small either to protect my chickens and the place. :) There is one at the pound now that is half golden retreavor but a lil worried about that one since they go after birds in their hunt. But they're going to put him down if no one gets him. Would be an hour or more drive for me to go get him plus heavens knows HOW much they'd want as well. Just don't have it but sure thought about it. He's a pretty dog to. Don't know WHAT the other half is. Someone asked but no answer since I checked last.

A golden is a smart breed and very receptive to training. They make great family dogs too...I love the breed and you don't see it much anymore. Used to be they were pretty common and everyone seemed to have one but the fad died out when overbreeding led to hip, joint and heart problems.

The good thing about retrievers is they have a soft mouth, meaning if they catch a bird they usually will carry it over, lie down and start plucking it...but not kill it right away. They are very food motivated so it can be used to train them and they are usually very eager to please and work for you.

I do hope that for you, Rosemarie...I hope that God will bring you the dog you need to help you with your chickens. God has always helped with my chickens in so many ways, which is why I entrust them to Him in all things and all ways. I know He is the reason for their safety while they free range and while I travel for work or family. He keeps them healthy and calm and well fed out on pasture. If I were you I'd pray that God bring you the dog He would have for your chickens and then follow your heart when it tells you it's the one, for that still voice is for guidance.

One good thing about this new rooster is that his comb and wattles are so short that he doesn't seem to have a problem with frost bite and none of the my hens have ever had a problem with it, so I'm not experiencing what everyone is dealing with in this cold snap. The funny thing is, even when I had Toby and all those huge combed meat roosters in an open air pen with temps in the teens for several nights in a row, there was very little evidence of frostbite. I do think open air situations seem to stave off the worst of frost bite issues.

Hello, I am new to the idea of fermenting feed and want to learn more. Is the ACV apple cider vinegar? Does anyone add plain yogurt to the mix? If i were to start a new batch of feed fermenting what should i add to the feed besides water? I am going to use 2 buckets with one having small holes drilled into it for drainage and then slid into the other. I also want to begin with layer crumbles.

Yes, ACV is apple cider vinegar. Some have used yogurt. What you add is your choice but if the feed is anywhere in temps 70* or above it can draw wild yeasts from the air for adequate and proper fermentation in a matter of hours and start your fermentation process. If you want you can add something to culture it but it's not necessary.

Well, today I managed to get the chooks to come out in driving snow! Crazy that! And I have a day-old baby rabbit squeaking at me from under my hair because it got out of the nest and was chilled. I am happy about the snow... It will insulate the coop and it will keep the temps higher closer to the ground. We will be dropping below 0 again this week. :| And all my eggs are coming to me frozen until they burst!

You would think that, wouldn't you? But...I took a pic! I always do for the doubters.....

You'll just have to take my word on those temps. You can see a few white tips here but no darkening and the tips restored to color when the cold snap warmed up.
