Fertile or Not

Hello, can anyone tell me what this large speck in my egg is?

Well, I'm not sure what it is.

But that isn't what fertile looks like. Fertile is a white dot on the yolk which looks like a bulls eye if it's fertile.

That could be a meat or blood spot but what throws me is how gelatinous it looks. Both are normal and happens sometimes when a hen gets startled or some other possible stressor.

It feels like cartilage.

Was it on the inside of a normal egg? Do you know who laid it? What is the age of the hen?

Maybe the beginning of what would have been a rubber egg?

Yes it was a normal egg, the hen is 3 1/2 years old, and was either a Barred Rock or a Rhode Island Red. What is a "rubber egg."

I do have a newly mature rooster who has been trying to mate. If that helps at all

Well, I looked it up since you asked...

And I guess a rubber egg is just a softee, so that isn't it.

So I looked up lash egg to see if that's what I meant, but it doesn't seem like it either. Although maybe early stages of salpingitis?

Wish I could be more help.

But as age comes, so does irregularity... why old ladies don't often have babies... much higher risk of derormities.

I see, it doesn't ever happen , I just wondered if it was a fertile egg because my new rooster has been trying to mate with other hens. I don't think it is anything major. Thanks for help

My birds are pretty healthy free rangers, they've never had worms, egg problems, or attacks. My flock has only lost on bird in all of the time I've have chickens, and that's because she was stupid and broody.

A couple links that show the fertile blasto disk, notice the bulls' eye? No bull's eye, just a spot means not fertile. But I am not sure if it actually takes a few days for it to develop into the bull's eye.

I haven't had worm or other issues with my free rangers either, yet.
