Filling the incubator 6-3-2011 Join me for my 1st attempt?

of course pictures are welcome! If I could get some decent candling pics to turn out, I'd be posting them. However, a photographer I am not.

Anyone know if Welsummer eggs are easier to see development when they are further along? The shell is too dark to see into it.

well my eggs have been is sence 6;30 on saterday its 10;30 sunday so they have over a full day and so far my temps have been holding steady im hopeing for a good first hatch but they are a bunch of mutt eggs i got from a old farmer down the road and its a mixed batch of eggs so i dont know what they are i only know that hes got a bunch of roosters and hens that are all different breeds and i have white eggs and brown eggs

Well, that'll be a nice surprise. The kids are hoping one of the Welsummers is a rooster. I was trying to picture what a welsummer crossed with a barred rock, or a welsummer and a buff orpington would look like... I'm only keeping one rooster, so I'm really curious to see what I'll get out of my hatch.

well 2 of my grand sons were here this weekend and it seemed like every 15 mins they were looking in on the eggs and checking the temps the kids are 6 and 7 years old they said they want to be here when its time for them to hatch out they both want to see them and want to pick out a few chicks for them to take home so it looks like im going to have to build them each a chicken tractor we told them they would have to keep the chicks in the brooder for a month till they were big enuff to take home they dont have a problem with it yet and they both live in small towns that they can keep them in so looks like the kids are going to be more excited than i will be lol

Hi hatchers,

Well I returned home from a nerve-wracking weekend away to find all well with my bator. Apparently, temp and humidity held spot on (with no hovering)!

I'm very relieved.

Stitch - I know what you mean bout candleing dark eggs. I have 15 Marans in my batch, and could hardly see a thing. My cochins were easy to candle. Unfortunately it looks like at least 3 of the 12 (maybe more) had displaced air cells from the shipping. :-(

I put mine in 1st and 2nd due to hatch 22 and 23 ^_^ and good luck with your first hatch i hope you have better luck than i did my first time i only had 4 hatch! out of 41

You know I'm a first-timer like you, not an expert. But what I saw when I candled the cochin eggs was an area separated at the top of the egg (the big end, when held pointy end down). then when I tipped the egg, that lighter area seemed to float like an air bubble to the middle, and finally small end of the egg. Then back to the top when I righted the egg.

If you search on 'displaced air cell' here on BYC, you'll probably find better explanations.

Most seem to think these eggs won't hatch successfully, but a few have had good results, so I've left them in the bator for now.
