Filling the incubator 6-3-2011 Join me for my 1st attempt?

Is it just the day 3 or 4 that you have to get past? I had an egg quit after 3 or 4 days, and all the rest are developing fine on day 10 1/2. Is there still danger of them quitting from now until lockdown? I had 2 eggs that I just couldn't tell, but candled this morning and saw movement. Out of 26 eggs, 25 are still going.

I hate to tell you but I had about 15 eggs that quit right around lock down in one of my last hatches. All were doing great and just died right during lockdown. The ONLY thing I could figure was that since they were shipped maybe the air cells were loose and when I laid them down for lockdown it caused them to die. I was SOO sad.

I have 2 eggs that have large/somewhat displaced (most of the aircell looks fixed in place, but there is part of it that looks somewhat displaced) aircells. Can I just put those 2 upright in a carton for lockdown? Will the chick be able to get out if the egg is upright in a carton? All of the other shipped eggs thankfully have normal aircells.

Are yours Lavendar?

Well, I just candled mine again and had one LO that was a quitter. Still a few that I couldn't really see because they are too dark. There is 1 that I think is a yolker, but since it is so dark, I am going to wait a little longer. All the others seem to be doing OK.

I really , really want the rest of the LO's to make it. BBSO and BO's I do too, but I already have a few of them, the lavendars I do not. And do not know of anyone around here who has them, only Buffs... and getting shipped eggs really is stressful!

It's day 9 here, the incubator's running steady, all is well... But I'm tempted to candle..... I don't want to be disappointed or anything, but I'm curious to see how they're doing. I have 12 Lav Ameraucanas and 13 BBS Marans, so I'd only be able to see anything in the Ameraucana eggs. Hmm.

For you Brinsea Advance EX owners, what do you do with the lid when you take it off to candle? It annoys me that the humidity pump adjusts itself when the lid's off, so that's kind of another reason I don't really want to candle.

No they are an Isabel/Porcelain Project that ChooksChick is doing.. Supposed to be really pretty but only 25% come out that way and the chances now with only ONE egg developing.. blah.

Yes getting shipped eggs is stressful and expensive

I'm going to try using cartons with mine this time. I have 30 more EE's I added that came in on Friday. The corner of the box was all smashed in so in checking tonight most all have loose air cells. I figure the egg carton is the only hope I have of getting them to hatch. These are from the same person I had the bad hatch from before. I had 23 go into lockdown and only 7 hatched. ALL but 1 of the rest had fully developed babies that didn't pip at all. Must have been the air cells because I didn't have any temp issues.

When exactly is lockdown? Is it at the end of day 18, or at the beginning of day 18? The beginning of day 18 would be Sunday morning June 19th, the end of day 18 would be Monday morning June 20th...
When do yours go into lockdown?

It depends on when I set them. If I set before 12 noon (which I did this time), I could that first day as day 1. I lockdown in the morning on day 18. If I set after 12 noon, I count the next day as day 1. I still lockdown in the morning whenever I set just because it's easier for me.

I just found this thread; anyone mind if I join up? I set thirty eggs from our own hens on June 3rd. This is only my second hatch with this incubator; the one last month didn't go over very well (6 out of 36). There are also seven peafowl eggs in there, all different ages: our doggone peahens were laying eggs in each other's nests again, and we ended up with a bunch of half-incubated eggs. I keep hovering over that incubator, worried that one of the pea eggs will pip without my noticing it and I won't get the humidity hiked up in time. It's gonna be a long few weeks at this rate!
