Filling the incubator 6-3-2011 Join me for my 1st attempt?

As long as your humidity is where it should be, I don't believe the fan makes any difference as far as drying them out. I have a homemade incubator and just hatched out 10 of 10 ducklings. The fan wasn't an issue at all. There was no sticking to the shell, they all popped right out. I like the fan as I feel it helps to circulate the air, and keep a more even temperature throughout the incubator instead of hot/cold spots.

I think you'll be fine. In fact, from what I've been told the worst thing to do is to check on them too often. Especially if you're actually opening the incubator. Shrinkwrapping occurs from the albumen drying out which it does really quickly once the lid comes off. It seems like it recovers really quickly to us but from what a very experienced breeder recently explained to me, you can really endanger the chicks who are pipping and zipping if you're trying to open the incubator and pull out newly hatched chicks. I'm doing the same as you. Lockdown for me isn't "technically" until tomorrow morning but if we get any early babies I don't want them to get stuck in the turner. I'm trying not to think about it too much because I just want to go candle right now and I know i don't need to. Going to have to sit on my hands!

k...lockdown complete. holding steady at 99.5 degrees/64% humidity. 17 left from the original 22 eggs and i saw 16 of them move when i candled yesterday. one of the marans eggs may be a quitter but i put it in the hatcher just in case.

I go into lockdown tomorrow, I have eggs that should hatch on Sat and Sun so I am not for sure what is going to happen. Boy do i need to get ready for them. I am running out of room to put all the fuzzy butts that I am hatching.

going into lockdown tomarrow night i should have mine hatching out saterday night or sunday here too ive got 11 eggs that i can see the chicks moveing in and one that i can only see the air cell in so thats the big ? mark one so even if i can get half of them to zip out ill be doing good the way i see it cause its my first hatch and all the power outages we have been getting here this past month today alone the power has flashed off and nack on 4 times but not more than a few secs each time but its clear and 80 out side so who knows why its doing that lets hope that they all hatch

I put mine in lockdown this afternoon. I had to throw out 2 Marans eggs that smelled really bad. I did the ziploc bag trick and opened them...yep, they were rotten. They had quit a long time ago.

So that leaves me with 12 Marans (or 15 shipped) and 3 cochins (of 12 shipped). I have no idea if I'll get even a single chick, but I am hopeful for a few, at least!

temp and humidity are doing well...so we shall see.
