Well folks, my first hatch is over. And I am so stinking mad at myself, if I was flexible enough to kick myself in the butt, I'd do it. I had 22 eggs that I put into the hatcher. They were all moving on day 18 before lockdown. Yesterday, day 21, at 5 a.m. the first chick was hatched, with 6 more following not long after. I had one more egg that had halfway zipped and had a large opening in the egg. I could see the membrane was over it's head, so... I helped. This poor little guy is doing okay, but not really walking well at all. Now, the other 14 eggs had done NOTHING. No chirps, no peeps, nothing. The 7 that had hatched were knocking all the other eggs around so badly that I decided to take them out. I broke the cardinal rule of hatching. DON'T EVER OPEN THE LID AFTER LOCKDOWN!!! EVER! I, in my newbie arrogance and stupidity, thought to myself, "I'll be really quick". And the humidity never dropped below 67%, or so my hydrometer said (I know, I know, I should have calibrated the darn thing). After a night and another day of no pips, or peeps, I decided to put a small hole in the top of one of the remaining eggs to see what was going on. I know, I'm impatient, lesson learned. The little guy was shrink wrapped, and dead. So, I tried another one, same thing. All remaining 14 eggs were shrink wrapped and had already died. They were all perfectly formed chickens that had nothing visibly wrong with them. The only thing that makes sense, is while I was removing the chicks, these poor little guys still in the eggs became shrink wrapped due to me opening the lid. I will never, ever, break the cardinal rule again, ever. This was a very painful lesson learned.
