LOL

I am on day 21 with my little lonely single Orp egg that made it to lock down and nothing. I stuck a light in there last night and checked and saw movement so HOPEFULLY everything is ok.

HAHAHA!!!!!! Well I was just thinking GREAT! Just like my pregnancy THESE babies are going to be overdue!!! I had to force my son out! I just yelled at my eggs very sternly "Don't make me come in there!!!"

So cute!!!! This time in the process is really expectant. You are going to LOVE bonding with your new babies once they hatch and get old enough for you to really interact with them. And it is such a sweet moment when you watch them hatch; it's really a beautiful experience. One little dot of sharpie wouldn't hurt at all, by the way. It's not enough chemicals to do any damage. But crayon IS a god idea. Anyhoo, hope you have wonderful luck and a wonderful time:D Good luck and cluck cluck!!!!

Well, I don't have to scream . . . much . . . one egg has pipped. Bless its little heart! We also had a peachick hatch out in there last night; I'm letting it stay in there until it finishes drying off. It can't be coincidence though that the egg that has pipped is sitting right next to the peachick's egg. I bet the little bugger gave that egg a good solid kick when it came out, and the other chick has decided it's time to make a break for it.

But oh, boy: once again day 21 has dawned and things are not proceeding normally in that incubator. I wonder if I'll ever get the blasted thing adjusted properly!

I just went into lockdown early this morning. I candled right before. I saw movement in all but the really dark eggs, so that's exciting, but I noticed something odd. Some of the chicks seem much bigger than the others. Some seem to take up the whole egg, while others still had room at the bottom. Is this normal? I have several different breeds in the bator. I also have some odd shaped air cells, probably the result of shipping. Anyway...now I'm just waiting... Started with 15...11 remaining.

Well folks, my first hatch is over. And I am so stinking mad at myself, if I was flexible enough to kick myself in the butt, I'd do it. I had 22 eggs that I put into the hatcher. They were all moving on day 18 before lockdown. Yesterday, day 21, at 5 a.m. the first chick was hatched, with 6 more following not long after. I had one more egg that had halfway zipped and had a large opening in the egg. I could see the membrane was over it's head, so... I helped. This poor little guy is doing okay, but not really walking well at all. Now, the other 14 eggs had done NOTHING. No chirps, no peeps, nothing. The 7 that had hatched were knocking all the other eggs around so badly that I decided to take them out. I broke the cardinal rule of hatching. DON'T EVER OPEN THE LID AFTER LOCKDOWN!!! EVER! I, in my newbie arrogance and stupidity, thought to myself, "I'll be really quick". And the humidity never dropped below 67%, or so my hydrometer said (I know, I know, I should have calibrated the darn thing). After a night and another day of no pips, or peeps, I decided to put a small hole in the top of one of the remaining eggs to see what was going on. I know, I'm impatient, lesson learned. The little guy was shrink wrapped, and dead. So, I tried another one, same thing. All remaining 14 eggs were shrink wrapped and had already died. They were all perfectly formed chickens that had nothing visibly wrong with them. The only thing that makes sense, is while I was removing the chicks, these poor little guys still in the eggs became shrink wrapped due to me opening the lid. I will never, ever, break the cardinal rule again, ever. This was a very painful lesson learned.
