finding a horse trainer

~*Sweet Cheeks*~ :

Are you able to spread her hay around the property so she is able to graze rather then stand in one spot all day if she wants to eat?

From the pics, it doesn't look like there is anything for her to graze on. Maybe cross fence with the hot wire so you can let half the pasture rest and grow something. Maybe sprinkle a good mix of seeds this spring when temps warm up.

When I had my two girls, I would go out and throw several flakes all around so they had to go graze for their hay.

Hi sweet thought about you the other day....was gonna pm you.

I can do that in the warmer weather right now are ground is covered in pretty deep snow. I don't want to waste the hay anymore then she does see above. I have it under the shelter area it will stay somewhat dry and good if it gets on the ground if winds stay down which they have lately but not always sometimes wind is really bad here. We live in a cannon so the wind rips through here.

There is nothing that grows here it does in the early spring then dies eventually because it dries out. I want to put seed out but I don't have irrigation rights so my husband says not too cause it will just die. I would like to get irrigation rights and see what I have to do to get them....I am not sure.

We will run hot wire down the middle too, eventually but that is too keep her on one side and a cow or two on the other since she wants to be mean to them or overly excited bucks at them, runs them, bites, rears like a big game to her but won't have a cow till spring and probably not be put out to bigger pasture till fall/winter.

Thank you for checking in.

Maybe you could build her something like this: http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/grd/2087677251.html

Slow
Hay Feeder or Grazing Box. I see this advertised all the time on Craigslist. A bit pricey for the one he's selling but would be easy to build yourself in a covered shelter in the corner with used wood and a piece of cattle panel.

Or some how attach a piece of cattle panel to the top of her tire? No - that wouldn't work because the cattle panel needs to float on top of the hay so she can pull bits through.

Cut it just loose enough to fit in there so it is level with the hay always as it goes down...I sent it to the builder.

I found a trainer not one of the mentors either. They live in the same city as me and actually keep their horses and train some horses right down the road from me. He was referred to me by a worker at a local feed store. I explained some things about the other trainer and the worker suggested this younger guy, she said he is more gentle when training horses. He is to come out on sat. to talk and get a feel for my horse and we will go from there.

I have the wormer....safeguard is what I got. Can I just give it at anytime w/feed or w/out does it matter? I don't think it matters, never heard it did but want to make sure.

I also got the Omolene 200 today and not sure I understand how much I should give her at first and for how long to work up to the right dose for her. I understand 1 pound per day or 1 pound per feeding? But for how long before upping that and to what etc.?

I think we have a plan on a feed box too...it will be similar to the one sweetcheeks posted but a bit different set up....for convenience on feeding. Not sure when it will get done but if interested I will post pics when done.

I usually give my de-wormers before eating, so the paste doesn't get caught up in a bunch of hay and spit back out, tastes nasty so they try. Right after I'm sure they've swallowed, I give them some grain or other treat to help clear out their mouths and get it all down. Then she can go about business as usual. If she's a bit hard to get the de-wormer into, mix it with a little 200 and let her eat it that way. Just make sure it's only a little so she'll eat it right up. I'd start with 1 lb/feeding for 4 or 5 days, then go to 2 lbs/feeding for a week if she does ok and finally to 3 lbs per feeding until she's up to where you want her to be. When it gets warm again, you can try cutting her back to just a little bit, like 1 or 2 lbs per day to see if she will keep her weight through the summer.

Your feeder sounds cool, do post pics when it's done!

Hope all this helps you.

She had her first 8 ounces of Omolene 200 today. She seemed to really like it. She was wormed today and putting a bit in a pile of Omolene worked wonderful. Thank you for the idea. Should of seen the face though lol. So I will give her the other 8 ounces tonight.

You don't think I need to do more then 3 pounds a day through the winter then? I thought it was 5.25 pounds or 5.75 pounds per day. Well thats with 14 pounds of hay....and she is getting free choice so less would be ok then, I guess.

@ dreamcatcher

I was wondering too the first pic of you horse you posted....I think it was the one that passed away recently. Why does he look so big for an arab? I thought they were small.

How is your husbands arm doing?

I meant 1 lb per feeding, the 2 lbs per feeding then 3 lbs per feeding, so 1 lb breakfast & dinner the first week = 2 lbs per day, then 4 lbs per day, then 6 lbs per day (easier than measuring our 3/4 of a lb if you have a 1 lb scoop). Then cut back by one lb per day come spring until you find the right balance.

That's cause Lucky was a Foundation bred Quarter Horse. It's his fault I got into Arabians LOL! In his prime Lucky stood 14.2 hh and weighed 1300-1400 lbs and wore a size 84 blanket his shoulders were so big.

Then next pic is of Pattie, she's 3/4 Saddlebred, 1/4 Arabian and 16.3 hh.

The 3rd pic is of my stallion svs Il Divo, he's purebred Arabian and Russian & Polish bloodlines mostly, so he's a good sized Arabian at 15.3 hh. He's only 3, coming 4 and still growing. I tend to lean toward the Russian bloodlines in my purebreds so they tend to a little bigger than the average Arabian. The breed standard calls for most horses to be between 14.1 & 15.1 with some individuals being over or under those measurements. (In other words, they're all within standards, LOL!)

Hubby's arm is doing well, thanks for asking. He's rather enjoying the ability to be utterly useless for 6 weeks!

It's amazing, I broke my R Arm in almost the exact same place about 7 years ago and I still mucked 10 stalls, the arena and round pens and fed all my horses 2 times a day. In addition, it was breeding season so I bred mares and collected stallions, all with a cast on my right arm, and I'm right handed......how do you suppose I could do all that and he broke his L arm and I practically have to brush his teeth for him????? He's right handed by the way.........

Oh ok so I gave her a pound this morning.....I used my kitchen scale and I had a 10 ounce cup for calf replacer....I just made sure it was the same in ounces and it was. Whatever will be easier on her to get use to it is fine with me.

I did not think the first horse was Arabian when I first seen it....the ears did not look right or the neck. He was huge too....that short and weighed that much wow. Thats the kind of ridding horse I need now. I have been looking for a horse to ride now also another thread.

Pattie does not look that tall to me in those pictures.

I like your stallions color in the first pic the next pic is very different in color looks chocolate. He seems taller to me then Pattie.

I was told by AHA my horse has mostly russian/polish lines. Her dam seems wide and big to me. Some people say I will be able to ride this filly some say I won't be able to because of her size and my current size. Never know I may loose weight by the time she can be ridden anyways. I weight 270 so plus tack. Daizy's sire is a nice looking show horse out of Vancouver, Washington. Daizy, dam, and sire are all from there actually.

Well he probably works very hard all the rest of the time and its winter, I guess let him enjoy it for a while. My husband does all the building stuff and running the tractor etc. I do all the daily feeding/maintenance and cleaning. When we are doing deep cleaning I am out there working too. We each have other jobs too around here. Have to have a balance and understanding, not that you guys don't. We just each do things we know we can.
