Wow. Even the farm, which was probably there before the subdivision or HOA, didn't get grandfathered? Ouch. I'm going to quit now before my political views get me in trouble.

On the original post... Our birds, so far, are laying their eggs in the nest boxes. They have the run of our yard and woods; about 5 acres. We've yet to find any eggs outside the egg boxes. *knocks on wood* Oh wait, we did find one just outside of the coop. It happened when they were first starting to lay and hasn't happened since. We're thinking/hoping she was just surprised by the newness of laying and couldn't get back to the coop in time.

As for chickens respecting property lines?!?! How did you manage that. Ours stay on our property for the most part but will occasionally wander across the street to roam the rows of field corn or climb through the fence to relax under a neighbor's pine trees. When it comes to finding tasty bugs, the chickens are no respecters of boundaries.

Oh I've given up on my HOA. They are hopeless...

Thank you so much for the answers! I think what you are saying is that basically, chickens don't run off, and stay by there coop? The only thing I would be worried about is a road being about 150 yards away that isn't too busy, but it's not quiet....

Staying close is a relative term. hehehe. As mentioned, we have almost 5 acres and they do wander. But, ours at least do return to the nest box to lay and are in their coop every evening. They'll come running if they are in the woods and hear us outside. They are getting conditioned to do so because we try and give them treats as a reward for such behavior.

The road in front of our place is much closer but has very little traffic other than the couple of people who live on it. So, in that respect we are lucky. On occasion they will be near the road when we return from an errand. On those occasions we'll honk the horn at them or open the window and shout a little. In our minds at least we're teaching them that cars should be avoided. Whether they take it that way... who knows. hehehe

If it worries you that much and it is in the budget, even a 3ft hedge row would help keep them off the road. Might not stop them completely but it would help discourage them.

Don't give up on your HOA. Keep hammering them till they relent. Recruit some friends and neighbors to help.
