First $400 egg

I started out with 4 RSL, then added 3 EEs, then when spring came TSC had chicks so I bought 8 more! Well went back a few days later and they had some blue LF chicks and I am a sucker for the blue color. So you have to buy at least 6 so I came home with six more! I think after its all said and done I have 19 grown birds and a broody with 5 chicks. Want some B/B/S Ameracauna and some BLRW. Gotta love Chicken Math.

My first egg was at least $2000 also, and the price continues to go up!

My DH doesn't complain because he has expensive hobbies also, and I never say a word about the cost. He knows I love my "little poopies" and I figure, as much as we work, we should enjoy some of it, not just pay taxes on it.

Yes, the chickens from Mt Healthy were the least expensive part of the venture. There's the coop, the grain, the electricity and so on and so forth. They come to the fence and greet me when I open the back door, however, which is more than I can say for my other "pets." So I guess it's worth it. Plus they will be paying me back a little at a time, hopefully. And I'm a "he" for future posts. My wife is not a critter lover. It's a wonder she even loves me.

Yea, my husband said my first dozen cost 2500$.. Cost of the coop, run, chickens, treats and food! Since then he says each egg costs at least 100$ cause he "knows he will be building another coop, buying more chickens, raising greens--just for them, poultry magazines, books, buying crickets and meal worms, shavings" .... He knows me too well!!!

Yes but they will build ' to keep us happy, because we like to keep our girls happy!

It may cost $'s for the girls, but the continuous humor is priceless!

My third ex-husband, before he was an ex, about had a coronary when one of my cats got VERY sick and I spent $900.00 on vet bills to make him all better. To him, cats were "throwaway" pets. (And it was MY money, not his, anyway - I pulled my retirement funds out when we got married, to pay off some of HIS bills, and there was money left... )

Now and again, I smile, thinking about the money I spend on housing my chickens, or on the treats, or the ... anything to do with them. It's just money. I won't always have it to spend but neither will I be able to take it with me. When a cat rests across your shoulders and purrs, or a dog snuggles in your lap and thumps his tail, a duck waddles across the lawn gabbling happily to see you, or a chicken hops up onto your knee to look in your face and say, "Birk?" - how can you put a price on those things?

Chicks cost all of $2.50, or maybe $2.65, or a duckling $6.25, but that doesn't mean they're CHEAP. Hah!

As of today, I'm at $42 per egg. Been at this for a week and a half. Course I cheated and bought grown hens. LOL

Hey, I'm right there with ya. I spent way over $700 in vet bills alone on a dog I found in the road. This dog has incontinence issues and pees on my couch (not on purpose). My husband and daughter adore her (the dog) and well, I do too.

The chickens - don't even want to think about what I've spent on them! At least I'm getting two beautiful eggs a day!
