great thread! Our pullets Oregano and Barbecue were 16 weeks on Wednesday, and I've seen some squatting behavior over the past couple of weeks. They are going to the county fair to be shown from August 8-13 and I will LOL if they lay their first eggs at the fair.
Still no egg and no interest in the nest box...no squatting, but VERY red in the face and much larger comb/wattles...but one bit of good news: one of my dominiques was "talking" a lot more today. Not the egg song, but definite "talking"... they are usually very quiet, so I count this as some measure of change..
I have an interesting first egg story. I posted a while back about my white leghorn who laid our first ever egg. Since that time, three more have begun laying. Yesterday, my husband and I noticed that our Cuckoo Marans wasn't moving and standing kind of hunched over while we had them out free ranging. She has been doing the squat for a while so we knew she was close to laying an egg. He walked over and picked her up and held her. She hasn't been carried before but she didn't put up a struggle. He brought her over to me and set her down in my lap. I was talking to her and running my hands over her body to see if I could feel anything wrong, when I felt something hit my leg. I said, "great, she just pooped on me", but when I looked, there was a really soft shelled egg. She laid her first egg in my lap! I feel really special!

Hi! I was reading this thread to see what to expect from my girls when my grandson came running in with an egg!!! Our very 1st egg ever!! We have six barred rocks and six Americana/easter eggers. Not sure exactly how old they were when bought (1-2weeks?) from local feed store, but I think most will be 20 weeks about Aug 1st. Am soo excited!! 3 girls are defanatly more mature (wattle/comb size and color) so I expect there will be more eggs soon.
Anybody out there know at what age the Ameracanas start laying? We are anxious to see those fun colors!
