First Egg Countdown

Pics
N&MSchroeder :

I have an interesting first egg story. I posted a while back about my white leghorn who laid our first ever egg. Since that time, three more have begun laying. Yesterday, my husband and I noticed that our Cuckoo Marans wasn't moving and standing kind of hunched over while we had them out free ranging. She has been doing the squat for a while so we knew she was close to laying an egg. He walked over and picked her up and held her. She hasn't been carried before but she didn't put up a struggle. He brought her over to me and set her down in my lap. I was talking to her and running my hands over her body to see if I could feel anything wrong, when I felt something hit my leg. I said, "great, she just pooped on me", but when I looked, there was a really soft shelled egg. She laid her first egg in my lap! I feel really special!

Hooray for Red, my NH. I watched her for over an hour this afternoon trying to figure it out. She finally did it! A small, but perfect, little egg. No egg song, not even a little squawk, so exciting:)

Sooo happy for all of you and extremely jealous at the same time. I have 2 - 4 weeks to go and maybe longer for a younger one that came to us more recently. I have so enjoyed all the stories, the frustrations and the triumphs. I do hope it continues until I can finally post that I have my first egg.

We just finished the nest boxes tonight. They were complete in the coop, but we added ledge for a landing spot and to keep the bedding/eggs from rolling out. The countdown is on! They're all about 16 weeks now and the girls have been more and more red! My SO and I have a bet on who is going to lay first, though it may be difficult to really tell. I'm so excited! Go baby chicks, go! (Yeah, 4 months is still a baby IMO!)

wow N&MShroeder! That is a really up close and personal way to get your first egg! Lol I bet you were surprised!

Our Princess Primadonna Prissy Pants just squatted for the first time today! We were shocked because she's always so off-put by the icky humans trying to do anything but shower her in treats. I caught her practicing egg-song today too. Sheesh what a racket! Maybe she'll finally do something other than give us the stinkeye! (my DH says that she's still his favorite even if she doesn't.)

my girls will be 20 weeks next monday--BO's are just starting to get a little red-one BR has her comb and wattle -all red-they are all the same age and it's funny how they mature--I have some BO's that are really huge and some not---AND ....I ask my rooster Rudy(same age) when he was gonna start crowing yesterday---and about 45 minutes later I heard him down at the barn--it was a funny little crow but it was a crow none the less-made me laugh out loud.

I have one of each of the following... Ameraucana, RIR, Barred Rock, BO... all 19 weeks old today! My BO has made this very loud cry the last two mornings and didn't want to come out of the coop. Is this a sign that she may want to lay? I have the nesting boxes covered... Is it time to open them up??

Congrats to all that are getting there first eggs. I am still waiting for my two to start but I think I am in for a bit of a wait. With the heat and all. I don't even really know there age but I think it might be around 16 weeks or so.
