24 weeks yesterday and we got our first egg... EVER....

, see, we are newbies! So eggciting! I had just gotten home from the store with another dozen store bought eggs, and jokingly yelled across the yard, "you girls had better hurry up and start laying...or else". Went out to check the food and water, peeked in the nest boxes, like I do every stinkin' day, and there it was, the prettiest egg I had ever seen, actually even in a box! Wow..who to call first? Just sent a picture text out to the whole darn contact list!

Congrats! If your friends/family are like mine, they will have a blank stare at you when are so excited about that egg. Only chicken friends understand the excitement!

The first egg is so fun. I still have the photo of my first egg. Seems like so long ago now, but it's only been a year. Congratulations!

Well I finally got it. The first egg from my original six. I believe it came from the one my girls call Moose, as I have caught her in the nesting boxes the day prior. I had also found two soft shelled eggs the week before. The strange thing is that she doesnt look as developed as two of my other hens. She has been acting a bit strange the past few days. She was more hanging out with the cochin wha has been laying for the past three weeks. Its a little 27 ounce egg that is light brown. Its a cute little thing. I need to post up a picture of her to see if someone can identify her breed or breeds. When I first got her she looked like my other white leghorn, but now not so much. She is all white except for a few black feathers around her neck and sides. Her tail is all white. She is also shorter than my leghorn. I will get a picture tomorrow and post it up.
Any way. YAAAA for moose. Her first intact egg. Now to wait on the other 5.
I almost forgot to mention. She is at 22 weeks for her first intact egg. 21 weeks for her egg without a shell and soft shelled egg.

During chicken chores this morning, my BCM was in the nest box. She sat for about 5 minutes, got up, looked at the golf ball under her in the box, hopped out, and started singing the egg song. she's been playing house for a while now. Heheheh.

I have a question for you all. I posted this awhile back and got no responses so I decided I'd wait a bit and try again. Most of my girls are flat out refusing to lay in the nesting boxes and the one hen that does, only does if she's locked in the chicken house!! I have tried the golf balls, I even tried leaving one of their eggs in one of the boxes. I tried locking them in the chicken house all day for a few days in a row, and I've tried setting them in the boxes so they can check them out....still nada! I find them on the floor of the chicken house or hidden all over the chicken yard. This is driving me crazy. It also seems that a few days after I've found the nest in the yard that they are using, they move and start laying somewhere else!

I'm not sure what else to do. The boxes are about the same size as the ones they sell at Dells, made out of wood, off the ground but lower then the roosts, I've tried two different types of bedding. I have 5 girls of egg laying age and 7 boxes to choose from...what the heck am I missing!?!
