First Egg Countdown

My first eggs in over 4 months have arrived. My 8.5 month old EE finally laid two for me! I've hardly been checking the nest boxes, I'd given up on eggs for a while. But today - there were two in there!
Next to some white store-bought eggs...

Oh wow! Those eggs are gorgeous! Just when I think I've seen the prettiest egg ever, someone else posts another egg pic! And your EE is beautiful! I absolutely love how dark she is!!

Yolanda laid her first egg today. She was 26 weeks old on Wednesday.

Hers is the first "blue/green" egg on the left after the two white eggs from my Leghorn.

Your eggs and Yolanda are gorgeous. I have a hen that looks almost exactly like her who's named Snowbird. She's 30 weeks old and I didn't think she was close to laying because her comb hasn't really grown and isn't super red like my other 3 hens when they started laying. Yolanda's doesn't look that big or red either. Is it just that I can't really see it in the photo, or is her comb rather small? I was just wondering because someone laid me a blue/green egg yesterday. My other girl who lays that color stopped a couple of weeks ago, I guess because of the short days. I just assumed it was hers, but now I'm wondering if it wasn't a first egg from Snowbird instead.

Thank you... yes... her comb is very petite. Smaller than the combs on my other EE's. As for color, the photo above was taken about three weeks ago, when she was 24 weeks old.

Here's what she looks like today (I just ran out there and took this photo just for you

). Yolanda's sitting next to one of the SLWs who is the same age as her and has been laying now for 2 weeks.

She laid her third egg for me first thing this morning after taking yesterday off.

All three of her 47 gram eggs have been in the hanging basket one of my other EE hens (the who is lowest on the pecking order and who my Leghorn won't allow in the nest boxes in the coop
roll.png
) has resorted to using Yolanda just doesn't care for the nest boxes. I think she likes the height of the basket better. It's about the same height as the roost, but without the raised coop floor under it. And she doesn't mess around... She gets in there... settles in for all of 1 minute, peeps a bit, lays that egg and gets out! My other hens will sit in the nest box for up to 2 hours before they're done. Yolanda is in and out of there in less than 5 minutes.

Snowbird just about sums up the appearance... My husband calls Yolanda "the one that looks like a snow owl crossed with a barn owl"

Yes I agree, EEs can have really petite combs. My EE Iti has a very tiny one, but she's one of my faithful laying hens, even in winter.

Our black sex link laid her first egg right at 20 weeks! What a glorious discovery!!! Seems like we waited forever, but it was worth the wait

Thanks so much for taking that photo for me! Snowbird looks just like that with that size comb. I'll find out for sure who's laying tomorrow since I'll be home in the afternoon. If it's my other EE, she'll be in there then. Unlike your Yolanda, my other girl Blue, likes to take her time in the nesting box. I'll let you know and I'll try to get a picture of her to post. Thanks again!

Congrats! She'll lay eggs for you like it's her religion or something. I love SLs!

So here is a picuture of my Snowbird. It turns out my other EE, Blue, was laying again. I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer!
