First egg from hen - not very tasty??

Hard to say if it's something in their diet.
Not sure adding scratch grains is going to 'solve' your 'problem'.

Well so far I've followed all the advice... Starter/Grower up until laying age, then switching to Layer pellets. Throwing in kitchen scraps, letting them free range... I guess it was only ONE egg, so I will update when I've had a few more.

By the way, another started laying today, wahoo!

Do you have the same breed of chickens as your neighbor? I know my silkie and black production hen have creamer yolk and the whites are not as stiff as my leghorn and Isa brown eggs that are boiled in the exact same pot and cooked exactly alike. The yolks from my leghorns seem a bit chalkier than the others too. And my kids like the deviled eggs with the silkie eggs because they say its richer tasting.

I've never followed that advice. :gig
Never fed layer feed and kept other foods/treats to a minimum.
The only reason I give scratch is to get them out of the coop when I clean in the mornings,
the 20% in the all flock allows it.
