First Egg !!!

What determines egg color anyway? My ducks look just the same but I always have only gotten white eggs? I thought it was the color of the duck and I guess that is not so.

I did research a few months ago on what egg colors each chicken breed lays. With it I learned how eggs get the color. Most pink tinted egg in breeds that aren't like 'Americanas' and EEs is because of the bloom on the egg. I'm not sure if this is the same for ducks but I assume it is.

All this information came from this link: https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/why_are_chicken_eggs_different_colors

I have seen this info on many websites so I believe this is true, but I'm just going to quote this specific article for a quick read.

"According to Michigan State University Extension, egg color is determined by the genetics of the hens. The breed of the hen will indicate what color eggs she will produce. For example, Leghorn chickens lay white eggs while Orpington’s lay brown eggs and Ameraucana produce blue eggs. An Olive Egger, a chicken that lays olive green eggs, is the product of a cross between a hen and rooster that are from a brown egg and a blue egg laying breed"

"All eggs start out white in color; those that are laid in shades other than white have pigments deposited on them as the eggs travel through the hen’s oviduct."

The color is literally painted on!

Yay!! First eggs are always exciting. I have pics of my girls with their first eggs (when I could tell whose it was anyway). ;)

My Cayugas lay dark grey to greenish eggs, my Calls lay greenish eggs, and my Cayuga crosses lay off-white eggs. The color variety is so fun with ducks!
