First egg!

I knew we were getting close to finding our first egg and my son kept asking when it was going to happen. It finally did on Wednesday! He called me on his watch from the coop to tell me about it. Then on my way home from work today he called me and my wife, while she was still at work, to tell us he found another. He was just as excited about this one because they laid it in the nesting box. The first was found under our waterer.

I saw on a post that there might not be yoke in the eggs? Are they still safe to eat? When do they start laying full size eggs?

I've got 3 buffs and 2 Rhode island reds so I'm hoping to be getting a decent amount of eggs.

Yay for the first egg!!! And the second! We have a bit to go before we get our firsts from any of our girls! A bit of research says that in the case of a fairy egg, it's perfectly fine to eat! Your nutrients are found in the yolk, though but if you like egg whites, you're in luck! First eggs, yolk included or not, are fine to eat! I'll let others answer on how long it takes to lay full sized eggs because they'll know better from experience! Welcome to production time!!

I don't think it ever gets old finding an egg least it has not for me yet.
The size... I'd guess between 5-7 lays... maybe. They just gradually get bigger. Only the first couple are cute and small if i remember correctly.

I've let the girls out in the yard this morning to roam and I've got one buff that seems to not be hanging with the other 4. She also just went up in the coop and, to me, seems like she was announcing to the world about the eggs in the nesting box. We've got 2 fake ones in there now so they lay there instead of the ground. Could she be our layer? I had one sitting in the nest next to the fake egg this morning when I let them out but didn't get a chance to check her leg bands to see if it was the same one.

Don't be surprised if you find a couple more eggs in odd places. The pullets are experiencing egg laying for the first time, so they often don't understand exactly what is happening until the egg comes out.

Chickens seem to like laying eggs where there are others, so the fake eggs should get them to lay in the nests once they come to understand "that feeling" means they are about to lay.

Also, the first eggs can be entirely normal or odd in different ways- small, large, shell-less, etc. That is pretty common and generally their systems work things out within the first few eggs. Congrats on the first eggs, the first of many!

It is exciting when your little chicks are all grown and laying eggs! We are seeing our first eggs from our 24 week old babies; 2 Cuckoo Marans and one Blue Jersey Giant. Two weeks ago, one of our Cuckoos laid double yolkers, two days in a row...her first eggs! After that, they have been the small, golf ball sized eggs. The other Cuckoo started laying a few days later, a slightly different shade of dark chocolate brown than her sister, but golf ball sized. Two days ago, the Blue Giant laid her first...are you ready for this...3 eggs in one day!!! Tiny eggs, and one of them had a shell so soft the egg did not make it to the photo. One of the eggs looks strange, a thicker, rough shell. But...three eggs! Has anyone heard of such a thing? Our older girls, two Easter Eggers, 3 years old, have stopped laying since the babies moved in. We wonder if they will start up again.

I have a BO who likes to announce everything- cat walking by, someone is in the nest box, it sounds kind of the same to me- INTRUDER! and she also crows sometimes too... but that is besides the point lol. Would be my guess your BO is about too start laying too (congratulations!!! most exciting!!!) Mine all seem to start laying very, very close to each other. Makes since because they are close in age too, one seems to pioneer and the others follow. I guess what i am trying to say in the long version of my experience is she may be upset about the foreign objects in the nest box and letting everyone know and/or announcing her lay. I always scratch my head when people say their BO's are sweet and quiet. Mine are sweet but are the noisiest out of my 4 breeds. I count on their eyes and voices to let me know what is happening, they are very consistent if you listen.

I waited about an hour and checked them and she wasn't in the nesting box anymore. When I checked it though, there was an egg in there! I think she is the only one laying right now. We have had 3 in 4 days and they have progressively gotten bigger. That's all I have to go on since I've never had chickens before.
