First Eggs! Four eggs!

I’ve been read here (and other places) for many months, taking notes and trying to learn all I could in preparation for getting my first ever chicks. Bought a very well made, Amish built coop, had a custom made run, ordered my dear little chicks and find I still don’t know as much as I need too. It’s good that old dogs actually CAN still learn new tricks. LOL

Most people with mixed flocks feed starter/grower of an all age flock raiser type food, usually around 18% protein. You should not feed chicks Layer feed, the extra calcium can cause kidney problems, they generally recommend 18 weeks or waiting until just before they lay for Layer.

You can keep them on All Flock their whole lives, I found out, and just offer oyster shell in a separate dish. They will know when they need it, although they may taste it out of curiosity. This is a good way to do it if you have birds of various ages, like older spent hens no longer laying, young birds along with your layers, and/or roosters.

YES IT IS FUN, i get 12-14 eggs a day.....i have 16 laying hens at the moment

Congrats to all on their first eggs, it's always a thrill. Three years into chicken ownership, I still get pleasure when there are eggs in the box. Nothing quite equals that first one, though.

Awesome! I'm jealous lol I'm still waiting for my first egg, It's been like 5 months! or 23 Weeks as listed on the calendar. I'm still checking everyday raising chickens was a way better experience then I thought it would be. Already have plans of expanding.
