First Hatch - Now with Chick Pics!!

Well I decided to just wait and see what would happen with the umbelical and the attached shell. Answer: It dried up and the shell fell away. Its hard to count them all, but so far I have 13 or 14 chicks with several more pipping and zipping.

It looks like the very first chick to pip Saturday night didn't make it. The pip never got any larger and there is no longer movement.

I am anxious to see what the final count will be as I have some BLRWs and Barred Rock eggs being shipped to me tomorrow. Hopefully, I have learned enough to be able to successfullly hatch them if the USPS doesn't scramble them for me.

Thanks all for the comments. As of this hour (12:53 AM Tuesday), I have 21 fuzzybutts with four eggs remaining and I still hear some peeping. One of the chicks is not doing great, we'll have to see how it goes for him tonight. I'm new to this but he hadn't abosrbed all the "stuff" from the egg. He was still attached to it and trying to get away. It was drying out but looked like it would take a long time, so I tied it off with white thread and cut him loose. I'm not certain this was the right thing to do, but I gave i my best shot. Pictures tomorrow I promise.

Well, the little guy didn't make it through the night. I had another chick die as well. All seemed fine last night. Still have four eggs in the incubator and hear peeping.

Aren't they beautiful!! A bit of a mix here: RIR over RIR, RIR over Ameracauna, RIR over Australorp, and RIR over Buff Orpington. I will be keeping the pure RIRs and selling the rest for layers to folks not interested in maintaining specific breeds. I have already sold four of the 19 that made it.

BTW I just set my 14 BLRWs and 10 Barred Rocks I purchased from OKIEHEN tonight!! Can't wait! Hope they hatch successfully. I also have 11 of same as above in the incubator that will go on lockdown on Wednesday.

Thanks! My grandkids are having a blast watching them. We raised the chicks parents from 3 day olds together, so they are excited that their chickens now have chicks. They're getting to see the circle of life in a very compressed time frame.

Awesome job and great pics too!!! So wonderful to share that with your grandkids....we just did our first hatch and only got 3 out of 10 (shipped eggs) and the kids got to see the chicks hatch...it sure makes an impression on them!!! We just set 12 more eggs that are due on June 4th...these are local eggs from a friend and so far I think we'll have a great hatch!! Enjoy your chickies!!

It' s fun to see the world through the eyes of my grandkids. Each experience is a new adventure to them. They are always helping me keep things in a right perspective. Joy is derived from the small things in life.
