Well, we had our first 'official' egg yesterday. (We got one on Saturday....but it was very thin shelled and broken when we found it)

Next to a large egg from the grocery for comparison:

We're very proud of our Stella!

(there are more pics on my blog is anyone is interested)

Now for the questions.....she's not laying in the egg box. How do I interest her in doing that?

The egg box is the cat litter container thing that lots of people are using. She removed all of the shredded paper from it, built her own nest in the coop, and that is where the new one got laid.

We do have fake eggs (two golf balls and a wooded egg from my daughter's kitchen set) in there....but those are not doing the trick.

Ideas?

Okay. Fixed it. Stupid Picasa. I had to monkey around with it a little.

And....we cracked and ate the egg for breakfast.....TWO YOLKS!! Go Stella!!

Nice work, Stella! That's a good looking egg. Try using golf balls or fake eggs (wooden, plastic) in the nesting boxes. Some even use a marked store bought egg in the nesting boxes.

You might just have to give her time. Our first 3 eggs were laid on the floor, but then the rest have been in the nest boxes. We have shavings and golf balls in the nest boxes...the girls just figured it out on their own after a couple days.

Then of course, there's the Silkie. She won't lay in the nest boxes now matter what we do...she's always on the floor...Silly Silkie

But now she's broody, so I guess we won't have Silkie eggs for a while...

Well, another egg (slightly smaller, probably just a single yolk this time) in the homemade nest on the coop floor.

They've done nothing with that nest box other than look at it and take things OUT of it.

Great first egg! Mine was a little tiny 'fart' egg!

I have 5 nest boxes. I had put a plastic egg in one box and a ping pong ball in another box. The first time they layed they went right in the boxes. Since my first egg I have two layers now and they go in the same box and do nothing with the other four boxes. The ping pong ball is since missing and the plastic egg still lays in the nest box they use...

Maybe just time or try putting the cat litter box where she is laying the eggs.
