First one, wrong end!!!!

When you candle the egg look for the chick's beak in the air sac. They pip internally, into the air sac, to breathe and it can take up to 6 hours before they progress from there. As you've seen with this hatch we had here, it's a slow process!

wow just found this tread now its vary interesting and usfell for the future incase anything like this acoored in the future if it was me i wouldnt be able to risist and i would have proble kille the chick by mistake

how can you tell if it pipped internally and its 07:24pm here in ireland now and could you show us a pic of him in the brooder

I will be so happy if this post helps someone! That is great! Then it won't just be the rant of a crazy lady, haha!

And yes this is a very SLOW process but slow has been better in my case.

I went ahead and candled since there were no external pips at the time. I got about 1/2 through the 10 left and saw one pip externally, YIKES. So I added another sponge as fast as I could and went back to lock down. Humidity didn't drop much. 65-60. It rose again quickly. But as far as I could tell from the 4 I candled, one piped internally, you could see its beaks shadow, 2 had no internal pip and the last one had a very thick blood ring at the top by the air sac (It must have died recently or I didn't catch it at the day 18 candle).

So who knows. At least I know to sit on my hands some more and wait.

I was able to clean up the hatched egg shells and arrange the eggs better where I could see them pip. When I first put them in I did not think about that. Being able to see the entire fat end is helpful in knowing who has pipped or not. Another lesson learned.

Oh and the lil guy WE saved will not be in a brooder until the morning, assuming I am not in lockdown mode. But I will definitely post one for ya as soon as I get him in the brooder.

So it's not over yet! I hope you get some more chicks from this hatch and they don't require assistance. You had your share of stress already

I'm not going to be online very much longer tonight, it's getting late here now, but I will check in tomorrow morning, so keep us posted!

Well Sumi, you are still asleep because it is only 5 am there. And I am sure Sally is already asleep, but maybe on of you or someone can get back to me when you get a chance.

Looks like the hatch is over, or almost. Out of 15 I put in lockdown we have 6 hatched. I candled earlier today when ya told me to and one had a clear internal pip. It is now 7 hours later and there was still nothing going on externally in any so I candled again. It still has the internal pip and I saw movement. No chirping. Looks like I am going to sit on my hands again until I am told otherwise. For all I know this could be normal. The last one hatched out 6 hours ago, so I am just going to wait until the morning to check again.

Hello everyone! So happy for all of you that have chicks hatching!! My call eggs 3 out of 7 have small external pips. As of 24 hrs ago. Some rocking of the eggs, but not much else. Is it ok to remove 1 and candle to see whats happening. I have heard that calls have a hard time hatching and usually need assistance. I am worried that they are in distress, but trying to be patient.

If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate the help!!

Good morning! If the chick hasn't pipped externally yet make a small hole in the shell, above the air sac line, close to where it's beak is.

Call ducklings can take a long time to hatch. From internal to external pip can take 24, during which time the duckling absorbs the blood in the membrane. The duckling pips through the shell (external pip) to get fresh air and it may then rest for another 24 hours while absorbing the rest of the yolk sac. Only after this is done it will start zipping the shell open and complete the hatch and this again can take a few hours. So keep the humidity high and don't worry.

OK it is still in there and no chirping, seeing movement. I will do my best! What are the odds of this happening to me again!

That was tougher than the other one, since there was no pip to start with. I scored an X with small sharp surgical scissors and made a hole above where it's beak was. When I pulled the membrane back I could see it still breathing up and down. Here is what it looks like, did I do ok?

Its beak is closer to that lower line. I was scared of hurting it... Did I pip it too high?

Now what?

It looks like you are going to have to work hard for your fluffy butts! Sometimes hatches just goes wonderfully well and other times

Do as I suggested and make a little pip hole for the chick. Hopefully it will encourage it and the chick will do the rest of the work itself! Any sign of life in the remaining eggs? And how's Ajani doing?
