First time experiencing chicken math

3c(bantam mix)= -1.5 as they are chicks
-1.5 chicks AND could be male means another -3 which = -4.5
-4.5 AND possible pigeon sized eggs means another -3 which = -7.5
-7.5 AND that they are in fact bantam which means broody means at least another -3 which = -10.5.

Now we all know chicken aren't available in the half form so best to round up to 11 chickens needed just to get to zero!
;) I've been practicing!

Wow! Youre good!

I don't own any birds either.

4 are breeding stock, they don't count because they pull their own weight.
Too many more to count are layers, they pull their own weight too.
A bunch are bantams and pet LF... they don't count, they're pretty much dogs. You wouldn't count your dogs, would you?

About 8 are roosters. They guard the flock, so they don't count.

Some more are growouts... they haven't laid yet so they don't count.

Ducks don't count either. They aren't chickens.

I ALMOST put myself even further into the negative! I accidently locked one of my cats in the brooder room, with no top on the brooder! I was so scared to open that door. Thankfully, Archie didn't eat them. And I know he must have been hungry being locked in there for 2 hours. Good kitty!

Archie clearly looks like he is not hungry. Better go in there and count those chickies again.

I'd like to see some more subtraction here. Have a cockerel who is part of a trio. If he and his ladies don't find new winter digs, it will be down one in the yard, up one in the freezer.

How do you count a broody hen? Is she a minus b/c she is clearly not laying? Is she an unknown variable? B(roody)H(en) + (12 eggs x .75 expected hatch ratio) = BH + 9 (C)hicks - 5 chicks b/c cockerels definitely don't count = 1BH + 4P(ullets). Clearly, if you have 1 BH, that is a manageable issue.

However if you have multiples of BH, you are entering into dangerous Tribble territory, and everyone knows how cute those Tribbles are.

Then, there's the time factor 1BH x 2(6 month periods/year) = (4BP + 1BH) = 5B x 4P = 1BH + 4BP + 45C = BH + 4BP + 20P! = 25 potential BH/BP at the end of one 12 month period.
