first time getting shipped chicks

I have an order placed through Meyers hatchery, they hatch 10/14 so hopefully everything will go well and there won't be any mishaps or delays with the hatch. We are getting 4 girls from them: 2 Black Australorps, 1 Barred Rock and 1 Blue Ameraucana. We also plan on getting a Cochin locally that will be hatching the same week. Initially I did not plan on a quarantine but now I am wondering if I should

. This will be our first time getting chickens, I already have everything for our brooder set up and really looking forward to it!

I'm sorry to hear that you have had your order canceled that really stinks!

I'm on the fence about cx atm. If I get them now, they can go out with my 25 dp meaties and I can have a few harvest periods between my 3 friends who have experience processing chickens.

I do have my hands full with baby chicks atm

This is the brooder box on the fireplace hearth in the living room. With my 6 ayam cemani and haffie chicks in it. I put pictures of the set up. The first picture is of heated tiles on on part, there's room for them to get away from the heat lamp if they're too hot. And watching chick tv from my sofa is awesome!

" I have 5 dp 8-9 week old roos starting to crow, "

I think mine were about twelve, the smallist was a polish, 2lb 12oz, the largest supprised me, the rir was almost 4lb. Mine have been crowing for a month. Good thing I live out of town, they started crowing at 4:30-5am, well before daylight, guess they didn't know how to tell time!!
Awesome pics! Will a cemani mix still have black meat?

From my understanding if you cross a cemani roo over non black meat chickens you get sex linked chicks with the pullets having black meat to varying degrees.

Unfortunately this was a case of a mottled orpington hopping into the cemani pen. Whoops!

It was quite the adventure to get these chicks tonight. The post office was very patient with all my calls and called me several times throughout the evening.

On the way there was an accident both to and from the post office at 11 pm. Yes 11 pm, we arrived there at 11:25 pm, the chicks were packaged wonderfully.

However I don't know if all 8 will make it, 1 especially looks very stressed

They all drank a lot of water with electrolytes and probiotics, with exception to the one idk if it will survive the weekend. A few ate and pooped pretty dark.

I hope these all survive. It seems like there is an even split between males/females. Time to nap!

i just ordered 50 chicks from ideal and they called to confirm everything a couple days ago, it's my first time. They told me the hatch date is tomorrow the 8th. Have you ordered from ideal before? they are pretty good right? do you know if they vaccinate for mareks (sp) or coccicidiosis (sp)?

I got my chicks through a private breeder and haven't ordered from a hatchery yet. Let me know how your chicks from ideal do, I was thinking of possibly getting cornish x chicks or turkeya from them in the spring.

How did your order go? You have to pay for the vaccinations so if you didn't add them to your order then they don't. I ordered and got my order of 8 happy healthy chicks plus 9 packing peanuts!
