I set 34 eggs on the 23rd. silkies and silkie mixes. due to hatch on the 16th. this is my first time. I am using a hovabator genesis. I have candled and I have 100 per cent fertility. so excited!

Those chicks are adorable!!! the_eagle69 I can't wait I hope some of ours hatch!
I will be candling tonight after dark, its easier to see things. I will be using a small LED flashlight I have used it to candle the eggs before I put them in but this will be the first time using it to tell fertility! I hope I can see something! With our old flashlight we only candled at 18 days because it was not very bright and we were using a broody hen and didn't like to disturb her.

I will post pictures of my attempt at candling later if I can get some good ones. How do you all candle? take out a few eggs at a time and then replace them and take new ones? Our bator is in the living room and I will probably candle in the kitchen because it is darker.
How long can I have them out without causing problems?
Melissa

I candled my silkie eggs for the first time. Gulp!

This is my first hatch, too....I'm so nervous. We are using the LG still air incubator, but I have two air tubes fed through the air holes to blow a small amount of air from a dual aquarium air-pump. It seems to be working because my temps are staying pretty consistent throughout the bator. I was having a problem in the beginning with one side (the one closest to the auto. turner motor) being hotter than the other. My temps fluctuate ever so slightly between maybe 99 and 101 (mostly dead on 100) which I hope will work out nicely since it is a "still/forced-air hybrid"! LOL.

I set 16 Ameraucana eggs on the 28th, and I candled a few of them before setting them--some were so perfectly oval that I wasn't sure which end was "up". I candled to look for the air sac, and I hope I have them all placed correctly! I used an 8 bulb LED flashlight to candle mine. I had a hard time photographing the egg while holding it, so I rigged up a "holder". I cut down a foam drink cozy, cut a hole in the bottom for the flashlight, and it seems to work nicely. Here's pic:

This is one my non-fertile brown eggs in the holder:

Here's a pic of one of my Ameraucana eggs the afternoon before setting it.

I plan to candle again on Sunday the 8th....hopefully we'll be able to see--and photograph--some growth in our eggs.....

Updated 3/10/09: to say that this contraption did not work on the eggs after incubation started. The Ameraucana eggs were just too difficult to candle--maybe lighter eggs would still work...???

I am a first timer and I am soo nervous, I just want them all to be ok. I have the LG/still air incubator when is the first red vent plug supposed to come out? My neice and I candled our 23 eggs this evening and I am really worried because I keep hearing that if the egg is bad it will explode. We got 24 initially and 1 was not fertile when we candled the first time it had blood ring (I think that is what it is called). We got the eggs from 3 different places (6 from a coworker, 6 from my best friend and 12 from a local feed store). The 6 from my best friend are a guineas (3 at least) and the other 2 we are pretty sure are bantoms. I am a first timer and have no clue what I am doing but have done as much research as i can. But it seems like some of the eggs even the ones from the same places are further along than we had thought....is that possible? 15 out of the 23 look GREAT, beautiful big veins and a few are even moving!! (Istarted this as something for my neice because she is completely crazy over animals especially birds, and I now I am almost more into than she is!! It is amazing. I am going to candle again tomorrow and put pictures up, if anyone has any pictures they could send/post that would be amazing.
Here are a few pics of our little setup...
