First time-New chicks

I elevate my mason jar a few inches above the shavings.

Elevate waterer on brick, almost any waterer, check for heighth, make sure chicks can drink, if it's too high, find something smaller. Don't go buy, use around house stuff. If brick is too high, turn an old plate upside down, or a round cake pan. Do same if waterer is low...... the diameteous (sp) causing breathing issues and doesn't benefit chicks or us, so I don't use it. Chicks are messy, don't stress it, before long they'll be crowing and laying......enjoy it!

Glad to meet you, Merissa, and welcome to BYC. You have been given several good solutions and tips about keeping the water and bedding separate.

When chicks are just a day to a week old, I tend to just keep them on paper towels, and swap those out as needed. They do need some kind of good footing so they don't get all spraddle legged, so you can't put them on newspaper or cardboard. Once they are a week or two old (depends on how bothered I get with paper towel usage and dirt!), I start putting in the pine bedding, and raise their water.

Best wishes with those birds! Aren't they cute?
