My Coop
My Coop
I'll be getting 12 EE eggs and 10 BO eggs towards the end of the month . I have a Nurture Right 360 just plugged it in for the first time today just to run for a few days and get familiar with it and check/verify temp and humidity readings , make sure turner is working and so on . I built my coop last summer and have 6 pullets now , this hatch if successful will go to my daughter who I am building a carbon copy of my coop for starting in a week or two . If there are enough pullets I'd like to keep one to integrate with my flock but we'll see . Any cockerels will go in the soup pot when they start to crow . We are also planing on doing the Mareks Vaccination on any newly hatched chicks ourselves , after discussing with my daughter and researching a bit online and talking with @kokoshka about it , we decided for the price and time investment and good and well being of the chicks it would be worth it to us . I'll have lots of questions along the way , still have a lot of research to do . I'll try to keep everything documented here . I have a digital Hygrometer in a baggie with the salt slurry to get it calibrated so I can check the onboard hygrometer , also have an old analog medical thermometer to check temps inside against onboard thermometer along with a digital thermometer . We also have 3 grandsons living here with us and they are quite excited about hatching out chicks , so it'll be an adventure . Here's the Nurture Right just after I plugged it in , 1st impression was its quiet , I've read that they were a tad noisy , I can hear the fan running but it doesn't make much noise , controls are easy to see , easy to use . Hopefully that will carry on . More to come . :)

Where are you getting your eggs from?

Eggs are coming from Meyers , just standard hatchery EE's and BO's .
It would be great if there was somebody nearby that I could get fertile eggs from but I do not know of any so it will have to be shipped eggs for now . We'll see how it goes .

I bought a NR360 in January. Been happy with it. Have not incubated anything but my own eggs. Shipped eggs may not be as successful. Have fun!

It seems to be pretty good , its holding at 99.5 F since noon today by checking the digital thermometer I put inside and also the onboard thermometer , humidity between 45 -50 % with vent 1/4 open . I just put the analog medical thermometer inside to double check the digitals and tomorrow I'll stick the digital hygrometer inside once its calibrated . The turner works fine too .
Yea , I know the deal on shipped eggs , kinda stuck getting fertile eggs in the breeds we want though . I'll go in hoping for great results (hatch rate) but being realistic about it too .

I've had the NR 360 plugged in and running since Thursday just to get familiar with it and make sure all is working well . I did get my digital hygrometer calibrated and have that inside the incubator as well . Temp has been holding steady at 99.5F - 99.7F , with chamber A filled and vent halfway open humidity was 45 - 50% , with chamber A & B filled and plug on Chamber B removed humidity held at 65% with vent open 3/4 . The onboard thermometer is matching up with the digital and analog thermometers I have inside the incubator and the onboard hygrometer read about 3 digits lower than the calibrated digital hygrometer I have . So overall everything looks good ,just waiting on my eggs now .

Forgot , cut a piece of the no/slide shelf liner to put on the incubator floor at lock down after removing the turner grid .

All looks good! If Meyer sends you lots of extras, you might just get what you paid for. I paid for 12 eggs total and now have 11 chicks, even with a 50% hatch rate on my shipped eggs, because the breeders sent so many extras. So I got my money’s worth.

Well , I ordered 22 eggs and the incubator holds 22 eggs so if they send any xtras not sure what I'll do . I suppose after letting them stand for a day before I put them in the incubator I could candle and pick the ones with the best looking air cell ?
If I can get a 50% hatch rate I'll be thrilled .

Hmm, yeah, you could go for best air cells. Watch out for fully detached air cells that move all over the place. You can just get rid of those right away. I had 3-4 of those and they all died within the first week. Of the next worst, the ones with the “jiggliest” air cells made it to lockdown, but then died in the shell for no obvious reason (they had the most misshapen-looking air cells throughout incubation).

Got the email from Meyers today , eggs shipped this morn around 11 . Priority Mail , tracking says expected delivery is Friday . From Ohio to NY 3 1/2 days ?? I really hope they show up sooner , I'll also run to P.O. in the morn and see if they'll call me when they get there so I can save them from our mailman , I think he was the same guy that was the mailman in the movie "Funny Farm"
