I just have away 5 goldfish that are hatched last year that were all 4-6" long. I doubt that they were the only ones in there but maybe I got lucky and the big koi ate those other fry I think I saw. I've been trying to get rid of goldfish for 3-4 years now.

If you treat often with potassium permanganate at 1 ppm it will kill the eggs. You neutralize it with hydrogen peroxide. It also gets rid of the hormones that keep koi from getting bigger.
Interesting!

We had koi in our pond for a few years. It is not a good idea. They do get huge and breed like mad. They are also considered invasive and therefore harmful to native fish. Waterbirds will pick them up and then drop them somewhere else, that's how they become invasive. Or so I heard from a natural resources guy. Ours all died after a very bitterly cold winter, but probably just as well.

I have 8 koi in a ~2000 gallon pond and they're my pets. I placed the pond under trees to protect from predatory birds and I trap and dispose of any feral cats that make my property part of their territory to stem that threat.

I wish I could have a pond like that! But yeah, some koi are insanely expensive too so I can’t imagine anybody would just willingly let them get eaten by birds, cats, or raccoons or whatever and not try to protect them in any way…

It isn't a question of "willingly". If you want koi, they belong in a smaller pond that can be easily cleaned, etc, like in a public venue, or similar environment, where predators aren't going to be a problem anyway. They're beautiful, but they don't belong in a lot of places, imo.

Sorry  didn’t mean to be rude or anything. I just meant like covering the pond or whatever. Maybe not possible with a big pond.

Lost this thread pretty quickly, never got to upload some photos I wanted

. @oldhenlikesdogs black moors are nice. I personally prefer the butterfly telescopes because they're more striking. They seem to fan out their tails more (hence butterfly obviously)
