It's not really gravel but I don't know what it’s called, good to know though!
If I go with just sand does it matter what sand I use?

Yes...and no. Really coarse sand works like gravel almost, which is a pain to siphon. In addition, some fish will express more intense coloration under black sand

We tried sand one time and would never do it again. Although some breeds like sand.

I've only used sand. Personally I love it

We tried it with guppies and hated it. Although im sure the cichlid would have loved it
