We tried it with guppies and hated it. Although im sure the cichlid would have loved it

If I go with just sand does it matter what sand I use?

I used two types, that was a mistake. Go with something from the fish store, expect it will not be cheap. It lasts forever.

I can't kill it. And they do a great job with reducing toxins, my nitrates stay about 5 even if I neglect water changes.

I've only used sand. Personally I love it

I've used both, much prefer sand.

NOTE: if you have a mechanical filter (with an impeller) either keep a prefilter on the intake tube or turn off the filter when stirring up the sand. Sand damaged my OTB filter's impeller. Now I have mostly sponge filters, so no sand damage.

Here's my 15g setup, from 2020. I had an Eheim Liberty 200 OTB filter, but used a prefilter on the intake tube.

The sponge filters are less work, easier maintenance, and I have no fear of sucking up fish into the impeller
(yes, I killed a couple cories that way)

I actually should be able to go to the petshop today, so I'll see what they have. I also want a sponge filter, hate the filter I have.
