My soft water is also extremely low in calcium. My snails used to die, their shells would disintegrate. On Wetwebmedia.com there was a shrimp aficionado who recommended using iodide (NOT iodine). They sell it for use in marine aquariums. You use one DROP per 10g of water once a week or at water changes. My shrimp get really red and breed like crazy, and I don't lose my snails.

Glad you found something that's working for you!

I'm so sorry. I have no experience with fish euthanasia. My boy is worse right now. He's pineconing quite a bit, but he's three, maybe older. He isn't bloated, and his activity has dropped for quite some time. IMHO mine is just old, and at the end of his life. Yours might actually have dropsy. I am very conservative when it comes to euthanasia. If he seems comfortable, I'd keep him around
He isn’t acting normal. He stays in his corner behind the heater and doesn’t move. His fins are clamped as well. He usually is spunky and attacks my tweezers but he hasn’t. Nor does he want to eat, which he has always loved doing.

Consider yourself lucky. We don't have a LFS. The closest are about a 90 minute drive away.

I order from Aquahuna. They're great, I get healthy fish, and they arrive ALIVE.

What is your favorite fish?

I order most of the stuff I want as well. Oof favorite fish. I'll do a top 3. African Butterfly fish, Multies, and lamprologus ocelatus gold. All of which just came in stock, but are too small for my setup

Yeah, unfortunately it seems like he isn't very comfortable. I'd think it through, and as fuzziness said, read some pros and cons, and come to a decision tomorrow. Sometimes dropsy is curable
