Cories are a little easier, tetra a little harder. It all depends on how many aquariums you're willing to dedicate to them, and how much cover there is in the aquarium. Fish that don't care for their young have that added risk in their breeding

My favorite fish? :pop

Striped Kuhli loaches, even when they hide a lot.

This is Big Bertha, in my 29g. ⬆️

And my Chocolate Kuhlis!

⬆️ I have six in my 15g, along with an increasing number of Red Cherry shrimp.

I love Cory cats, too, but since I already have loaches as my bottom feeders, adding more just means someone is going to be hungry.

I also adore Zebra danios, the cheapest fish in the LFS. When I was still young my middle/older sister bought herself a 10g aquarium. The heater malfunctioned and it was about 110°F in the tank. All her fish died, except the Zebra danios. Love 'em!

Bettas are nice, but I especially love the coloring of the females. Some day I may have a girls only tank.

My 29g is kind of empty right now. Aside from a few Kuhlis about 3 years ago the last time I added fish was in 2016. Yep, 7 years ago. The remaining residents are 6+/- Kuhlis, one Zebra danio, and 2 Glowlight tetras (NOT Glofish). I want to add a shoaling fish, and have chosen Ember tetras:

They don't grow larger than 1" so I can have a bunch of them in either my 29g or 15g. I just placed an order online. They'll be shipped next week!

And I also ordered 4 Nerite snails. They're powerhouse for algae control.

⬆️ Olive Nerite on the left, spotted Nerite on the right.
:yesss:

Well, I did it, I tackled a breakdown of the 29g to get it ready for the Ember tetras that will probably be here Thursday or Friday.

I disconnected the canister filter, which worked great for years...it's just getting hard to crawl underneath the table to disconnect and clean it. I'm gradually transitioning to sponge filters.

I removed all the plants, but put them in a bucket of water in case a snail or loach were hiding among the stems.

Then I removed the fish. I thought there were 6, but only found 4 Kuhlis :(. I placed them in a specimen cup hanging inside the 15g, to keep them warm.

Same with the Glowlight tetras and the Zebra danio:

Next I used a shrimp net to remove debris, while stirring the sand with my fingers. After the sand was pretty clean I added the new sponge filter (left side):

I also added a new conch shell ⬆️

This is what my soft water does to shells:

I thinned out the Java ferns and swished them in clean water to remove debris, then added them back to the tank. The tall "mountain" decor was covered with Java fern, and I tried to find what location would work best. I have tetras on the way that will want some mid-level swimming room, and I also didn't want to block the filters.

I finally moved the medium sponge filter to the center back, and slid the Aquaball from the front to the back on the right side. And when I was moving it, I found the two missing Kuhlis!
:celebrate

They were hiding behind the suction cup mount, they were just fine. Yippee!

So here it is:

Looks brand new! Wow, that must be very soft water. Have you measured it?
