Fisher cat?

I live in western NY. We get raccoons, foxes and fischers. I use a live bait trap. Then I SSS. So far I've gotten rid of 4 raccoons in 8 months. I know they will keep coming so I just keep loading up the live bait trap.

I have a powerful air rifle and a selection of shotguns, and if I wanted to take a chance on wounding that mink and possibly having it escape with me not knowing if it was dead, I'd use the air rifle. (Yours will not be in a trap to assure a head shot from short range....yours will be moving or free to run off if your shot placement is not perfect). If I wanted to assure myself of seeing it graveyard dead with one shot, I'd use a shotgun with #4 or larger lead shot. Remember, that shotgun isn't just one pellet. Depending on the gauge, it might be several dozen pellets all from one blast....lethal out to at least 30 yards or so. Which is why that shotgun would be my preference by a factor of at least 100 to 1. Just saying.

Maybe I should buy a trap and bait it over night, then shoot it with an air rifle

You can try that. Salted apples may work in a trap. We both live in high country and have similar predators. I would take it out because it's after your girls. Minks will kill them, Fisher cats are crazy when they are in attack mode. Good luck

Yes, fishers are the size of a large raccoon - not including the Fisher's tail. We have them here (NH). They are ferocious. I'm terrified about one going after my goats

Mink are notorious for killing a whole flock in one hit, they rarely eat the chickens, usually just drink the blood. I hope you get it sorted

Nothing that keeps coming back for your hens is up to any good. I would not let my hens out until the thing has gone they are very persistent so do not underestimate them for what they can do tho your flock
