Five-month old Australorp suddenly lame. Update: Now another pullet going lame!

That's what I'm hoping, that it will target a herpes virus if it's present and interfere with it.

I use this herpes med for both shingles flareups and herpes cold sores, the latter which I'm just getting over, so that's why I thought of it. In all the reading I've done on Marek's, I've never heard mention of using this med to try to lessen the symptoms. Maybe it's because it doesn't work, but it may also be because no one has thought of trying it. I'm not one to assume that I shouldn't try something just because I haven't heard of it being tried before. And I love experiments.

I was a bit over optimistic. She has had her meds and shows little improvement. Still not wanting to use the right leg. When I got her out of her hot bed earlier, I guess she was just thrilled to be free that she was willing to stand and take the few steps she did.

Look at it this way, it's no worse.

She looks good in her "Sauna"! Give her time to heal, the body is never quick to replace tissue or fight disease. Inflammation is one of the first responses to many ailments and it can slow down healing of any kind. As wimpy as this sounds, a few days a week of AVC can't hurt either. It's a natural inflammation reducer, it increases appetite and pumps up the immune system. 1 Tablespoon AVC per gallon of water to be palatable.

Keep up all you are doing, don't give up and stay positive!

The patient is holding her own. Maybe a tad more. It's warmer today, so I turned off the heat lamp in her hot box and after an hour I returned to find the box empty. The patient had flown.

I will take this as a sign she's getting stronger and may be in less pain. Chickens need a lot of "knee" action to get the lift straight up and out of a deep box, so there's that.

Her appetite isn't all that great, but she's pooping so she must be eating something. She's alert, bright-eyed, but tires quickly. But she isn't declining so far, as the other pullet did.

Thanks for the update, I was thinking about her this morning. Sounds like she is definitely improving! Keep up all you are doing! :)
