Five-month old Australorp suddenly lame. Update: Now another pullet going lame!

Denagard must not be something available in the US as none of the mail order medical supply places I use carry it, including Tractor Supply feed stores.

If you know where I can order it in the US, I would love to know.

Again sorry im dont know how to post links or i would, but i just checked and Valley Supply still carries it, and it is currently in stock. Costs around $50 for a large bottle with an expiration date usually at least 2 years out. U mix it in their water. I cant remember exact dosage, but i know info is on this forum. I remember @dawg (correct user name?) mentioned denegard as effective treatment for mycoplasmas many years ago. That is what led me to try it. U wont need nearly the whole bottle for first treatment, but studies have shown it is effective in keeping mycoplasmas in remission if dosage is given monthly as a preventative. Treatment dosage is higher than preventative dose. So IF u r dealing with ms, u will probably end up using the whole bottle eventually.

Watching this thread. We got Australorp chicks last March and have had lameness issues too. Ours came from Cackle Hatchery. We ended up culling one about a month ago and I noticed another favoring a leg today. Wondered if our roost is too high but now you have me wondering. Am a complete novice when it comes to treating sick birds, but the good news is there have been no signs of sickness.

After following up on the info on Denagard that @Allsfairinloveandbugs gave me, I am having a moment of enlightenment. Reading up on the ingredients in Denagard and what they treat, one of them is Mycoplasma arthritis.

Su-su has been lame for years, and it resembles arthritis. What if she's got Mycoplasma synoviae and that's where these pullets got it? They've been snuggled up with her since they were just a few weeks old.

Years ago, I had several hens go lame, and it was severe enough where they couldn't get around at all and I euthanized them. Su-su was the only one during that period that survived well enough to still function.

I tried to order the Denagard online from Valley Vet but couldn't complete the order, so will call and order it first thing in the morning. This has the potential of helping Su-su, too. I'm excited about that.

But, the latest pullet to come down with this was worse this evening. I'm becoming more certain that it's most likely MS I'm dealing with. Unfortunately, getting the Denagard anytime before Christmas is unlikely with shipping clogged with holiday packages.

@dawg53 can you tell me the best way to dose these pullets with the liquid Denagard? And I want Su-su to have it, also. I could get it next week sometime and want to be ready to treat them as soon as it comes. Glance over the previous post to come up to speed on what's going on.
