They truly are eating machines! We laughed at 1 because my son let them out of the run and took 1 to the other side of the yard and that big boy ran so fast back to the run it was comical to watch! I feed morning and night as they pick around for food mostly....when the dogs aren’t out during day the hubby lets them roam in our fence yard. They seem to get around so far so good for now. They r 5 weeks old! Almost ready!I'm going to guess they're eating starter. If so, keep a close eye on them when they get to be 6 or 7 weeks, you're looking for leg problems. If they start becoming immobile or show active signs of being lethargic, it will be time to process them. When I raise cx, I feed an 18% broiler mix from end to end and only feed them morning and evening. Generally what they can eat in 45 minutes or so. They are eating machines.
I may take u up on that lolOnce they get over 7-7.5 lbs live weight watch them closely a 7.7lbs bird should give you 5lbs of carcass weight. If you can get them to 9.5lbs live, you'll get a 6 lbs carcass. And just a tip about stock... Browning the neck and back enhance the flavor of the stock as does roasting the bird. Save the feet and use them in your stock they add a lot of collagen. If you would like to watch a vid on the process, pm me and I'll hook you up with what I used. But they weren't enough so I had to go to the farm and watch up close and personal.

My hubby will be taking care of all of this as I work 6 days a week and he is stay at home dad lol he’s a great cook and slaughtering chickens (I hate that word) is something that is not new to him. He used to help out a family friend....not me I don’t think I want any part in that except the eating part lolOnce they get over 7-7.5 lbs live weight watch them closely a 7.7lbs bird should give you 5lbs of carcass weight. Hi EVERYBODY
Okay, so TSC let me replace the one I lost.. so now I have a new Nina! I think she may be a mottled... and she fit right in and Nilky took to her right away... I just hope she knows to go under mama when cold and at bedtime cuz she has been in the store all this while.. and she looks to be about the same age.. Hey everyone new to chickens this year started about a month ago with 6 chickie-dos as I call them...up to 16 now and having to build a bigger coop before the newest bunch can go outside. I have a certain girl I talk to at the local tsc (she has been very helpful and wonderful) she did her best to sex my buff orpingtons (2 of them) to get me a rooster. She did great I have a hen and a roothose were the second “batch we purchased” first was 4 rir and 2 Cornish cross. Well they all went outside and well what do ya know we got 4 barnevelders (didn’t know what they were for days bc hubby picked them and payed no mind to breed) and I grabbed 4 barred rocks. These were straight run so it’s a gamble and what it’s lookin like between feathers coming in 2 hen 2 roo on barnevelder and maybe 3 roo 1 hen on barred rock o my at least they are all dual purpose so with that said my flock may be down in numbers by August lol. My kiddos are joining the local 4H and are having a blast with our new additions.
