Thank you so much! Very interesting about how quickly they'll be able to swim.Female ducks are just called ducks and your correct on males being drakes. A pair can work, but I'd rather have multiple ducks to keep overbreeding at bay. If you want quiet you should get muscovies. They are definitely quiet compared to mallard derived breeds. A quick wing clip can ground them easily. If you do go with a mallard derived breed, then you should know they, especially the ducks, can be extremely loud. Muscovy drakes hiss and ducks kind of lightly honks.
You can look on YouTube to see what kind of sounds they make.
If you get ducklings use a milk jug for water. Have a side cut out low enough to get their heads in but deep enough for them to be able to submerge their nostrils so they can clean them. I give ducklings a bath within the first few days, right after they start to explore and thrive. A warm bath then a towel off will keep them from getting chilled.
I hope you have fun with your duck journey!

Your getting ducks...How fun!!! Yes 4 females to 1 male will work(I have 3 to 1 and I can see some side affects so 4 will work great!). How big is the swing set? Most work great but ducks do have to have a little more room then chickens. Pekin ducks are great! I have one and...I hate to pick favorites...but he is a stinker. They will do great in cold weather as long as you have a coop free of any drafts and have plenty of straw(but you probably know all that cuz of chickensThank you so much! Very interesting about how quickly they'll be able to swim.
I was thinking 4 female ducks and a drake, just based on my chicken knowledge with more females than males, and the size of this old swingset I'm thinking about using as a coop. I was also looking at Perkins for a breed since I found out that they are friendly and lay eggs all year.
My only concern is about how ducks would react to our 10-20*F winters. Do you recommend any winter hardy breeds out there? (edit: I've found out they actually are very good in the winter. A nice sigh of relief.)
(By the way, I'm not in any hurry, I would say I'd plan on getting ducklings next year in February or March. This summer gives me time for a coop and run plan, as well as time to research.)
). I am so excited about you getting ducks! They are so so fun! I am sorry if I kinda wedged my way into your conversation with someone else...just thought I could give you some tips.
