Flock/Life Journey's 2019

Making new feathers is hard work & uses protein, just like making an egg does. They're not sick but can be susceptible to viruses & feel miserable, off their tucker & the new feathers are sensitive ~ & they don't lay! I'm hoping it's a *soft* molt & she will recover faster, otherwise it could be weeks & weeks... & weeks...

Ohhh ok. Whats the longest period of time you have seen your not lay for?

nope, :D this is my first time. I've been quoted as much as 16 weeks for a hard molt ~ when they end up nearly naked.

I just added another idea to my chicken coop ideas:
I want pavers under the water and food feeders so they chickens shouldn't be able to kick dirty up into them.
I raised my waterer on pavers because I was tired of it being constantly clogged but they still get it dirty! I have a treadle feeder & they still get that filthy. I'm afraid it's a fact of life with chickens. :(

Omg really. I don't mind cleaning them but I get scared when its hot the clog up the feeders and have nothing until I get home. On really hot days all I worry about is if they are alive.

I have the water tub sitting on a double layer of bricks~ so it's well above the mulch line but they will still perch on the rim & when they get really excited about their food all sorts of things end up in the water. It's a LOT better though. My issue was more about ensuring they had water available rather than soggy straw. I worry if I'm off island for any length of time.
